Jersey City’s challenging budget is done this year. We have much work to do to ensure we aren’t back in the same place next year, including revenue raisers that require state statutory amendments. Mayor Solomon, County Executive Guy, and I worked with the entire Hudson legislative delegation to secure the state aid package, for which we are all extremely grateful to Governor Sherrill, Senate President Scutari, Speaker Coughlin, and DCA Commissioner Suarez.

Help is on the way! I’ve secured $120 million in state aid for Jersey City—the largest municipal aid package in state history—amidst our city’s financial crisis, after working around the clock for weeks. I’m deeply appreciative to Governor Mikie Sherrill, Senate President Nick Scutari, and Speaker Craig J. Coughlin for recognizing that this crisis cannot be resolved entirely on the backs of our renters and property taxpayers who are already struggling. Shoutout to Mayor James Solomon and County Executive Guy for their tireless advocacy and roles in achieving this result. City officials still have difficult challenges ahead, but I hope this investment in our fiscal stability results in some relief for my neighbors. I’m raising my children here and am sick of seeing families forced to move out.

For me, grief and gratitude sit at the same table on Father’s Day. I’m thankful beyond words for the children who gave my life a new dimension and for the grandfather they’re fortunate to have and the love and wisdom and steadiness he brings to their lives. But what I would give for my dad to meet, just once, the grandkids he would have loved so fiercely.

Happy Father’s Day to the fathers, the father figures, and those carrying someone’s memory today.

At yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for the DEP Commissioner, I asked about the harmful Van Keuren waste facility proposal and New Jersey’s first-of-its-kind environmental justice law before proudly voting for Ed Potosnak.
