🐍 What To Do If You're Bitten by a Snake

If you or someone else is bitten by a snake, stay calm and act quickly.

✅ DO:
• Move away from the snake to prevent another bite.
• Call 911 immediately or get to the nearest emergency department as soon as possible.
• Stay as calm as possible and limit movement.
• Keep the bitten limb as still as you can in a comfortable, heart-level (neutral) position.
• Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing before swelling begins.
• If it can be done safely, take a photo of the snake from a distance—but never try to catch or kill it.

❌ DON'T:
• Cut the bite.
• Try to suck out the venom.
• Apply ice or cold packs.
• Apply a tourniquet.
• Drink alcohol.
• Delay seeking medical care, even if the bite doesn't seem serious.

Prompt medical treatment gives the best chance for a full recovery. If you think a snake may have been venomous, treat every bite as a medical emergency.

Stay safe and be aware of your surroundings while enjoying the outdoors.

🚑 Could Someone Speak for You?

If you were unable to answer questions during a medical emergency, would your loved ones know:

• What medications you take?
• Your allergies?
• Your medical conditions?
• Who your emergency contact is?
• Where your insurance and identification are?

These details help emergency responders and hospital staff provide the safest, most effective care possible.

Take a few minutes today to make sure your family knows the answers—or keep them written down somewhere easy to find.

Being prepared is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your loved ones.

🔥 Leon County Burn Ban in Effect 🔥

While we may not be a fire-based agency, we want to help keep our community informed and safe.

Leon County is currently under a Burn Ban. Please avoid outdoor burning and use extra caution with anything that could produce sparks or start a fire.

Dry conditions can allow fires to start and spread quickly. Please do your part to protect our neighbors, first responders, property, and our community.

🚫 Please follow all Leon County burn ban restrictions.

💙 You Never Know What Someone Else Is Going Through

Every day, our crews meet people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

A parent receiving unexpected news.
A grandparent who has fallen.
Someone struggling with their mental health.
A family saying goodbye.
A neighbor experiencing the worst day they've ever had.

These moments are a reminder that everyone is carrying a story you may never see.

A little patience, a kind word, or a simple act of compassion can mean more than you realize.

Today, choose kindness. You never know when someone might need it most.

🚑 Rural Texas Starter Pack

✔️ "It'll only take about 10 minutes..." *(It's actually 30.)*
✔️ A truck with enough snacks to survive a week.
✔️ One gas station that everybody stops at.
✔️ Everyone knows everyone.
✔️ One road everyone avoids after a heavy rain.

Living in rural Texas has its own way of doing things—and we wouldn't trade it for anything.

What's something you'd add to the list? 🤠

🚑 5 Things Your Local Paramedics Wish Everyone Knew

1️⃣ We would rather respond and find out you're okay than have you wait too long to call 911. Never let the fear of "bothering us" keep you from getting help.

2️⃣ Keep an up-to-date list of your medications and medical conditions. In an emergency, that information can make a big difference in your care.

3️⃣ Know your address. It may sound simple, but in a stressful situation it's surprisingly easy to forget. If you're in a new area or staying with family, take a moment to learn the address before an emergency happens.

4️⃣ If you're not the patient, be ready to answer questions. Knowing what happened, when it started, medications, allergies, and medical history helps us provide the best care possible.

5️⃣ A simple "thank you" goes a long way. We don't do this job for recognition, but your kind words and support mean more to us than you know.

We're proud to serve the citizens and visitors of Leon County every day. Thank you for trusting Jewett EMS when you need us most. 💙🚑
