Fire danger ratings are a complex system that determine how likely a fire is to ignite, spread and require suppression action. When you see a LOW, MODERATE, HIGH, VERY HIGH or EXTREME fire rating, that level has been set for the day based on weather, topography and other key risk factors, along with local fire managers' ability to respond.💡

As we near those months where you start seeing local businesses displaying "RED FLAGS", lets take a moment to understand their meaning:

Red Flag Warnings come from the National Weather Service and happen when dry fuels (grass, brush, trees) are combined with one or more of the following forecasts:
🚩dry lightning with less than one-tenth of an inch of precipitation
🚩any lightning after an extended dry period
🚩very low humidity with poor recovery overnight
🚩strong winds in already-low humidity conditions

Local businesses volunteer to participate in the "RED FLAG PROGRAM". They receive notification and post the flags to help spread the awareness. These flags are posted for the duration of the Red Flag Warning, and taken down when its over.
