Grant County Democrats passed this resolution today 5/27/26)
Resolution opposing IP28, a ban on hunting, fishing, and animal agriculture
A RESOLUTION OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF GRANT COUNTY
Opposing Initiative Petition 28, Which Would Ban Hunting, Fishing, and Animal Agriculture
WHEREAS, Initiative Petition 28 (IP 28), also known as the “PEACE Act,” will ban hunting, fishing, animal breeding, animal farming, ranching, and research if it is approved for the ballot and passes as a ballot measure in the November 3, 2026 election; and
WHEREAS, the IP 28 campaign claims to have over 100,000 of the 117,173 required signatures for approval to appear on the November 2026 election ballot as of February 2026; and
WHEREAS, the IP28 campaign relies on paid signature gatherers to qualify for the ballot and has significant funding, including $108,218 in individual contributions, a majority from out of state, and $140,821 in dark money contributions, and has spent $236,125 on petition circulation as of February 2026; and
WHEREAS, 22,538 animal farms and ranches would be shut down if IP28 passes, affecting 72,040 farm labor workers and 1,580 slaughter and meat-packing workers; and
WHEREAS, IP 28 contains no explicit exemption or recognition of the treaty-reserved hunting, fishing, and animal stewardship rights of Oregon’s nine federally recognized Tribal Nations, raising serious constitutional concerns and ignoring longstanding federal Indian law, and potentially undermining government-to-government relationships and Tribal sovereignty; and
WHEREAS, over 1 million Oregonians hunt or fish annually and would be unable to do so if IP28 passes; and
WHEREAS, hunting, fishing, and animal agriculture play a significant role in sustaining local economies, particularly in rural Oregon communities where small businesses and seasonal tourism depend on these activities; and
WHEREAS, IP28 could be interpreted to criminalize standard animal breeding practices including veterinary reproductive exams, artificial insemination, and assisted breeding; and
WHEREAS, IP28 creates legal ambiguity and fails to exempt pest control and wildlife management; and
WHEREAS, IP28 is getting media coverage, especially in rural areas, and Republicans are using it to create fear on social media
NOW, THEREFORE, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF GRANT COUNTY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Democratic Party of Grant County strongly opposes Initiative Petition 28.
Section 2. The Democratic Party of Grant County affirms its commitment to evidence-based policymaking, environmental stewardship, rural economic stability, tribal sovereignty, labor protections, and humane treatment of animals.
Section 3. The Democratic Party of Grant County recognizes the vital role of hunting, fishing, farming, ranching, and food production in Oregon’s economy, culture, and food security, and opposes policies that would abruptly eliminate these lawful livelihoods or create broad legal uncertainty.

37 Senate Democrats just told the US Postal Service to disobey Trump. Do not implement his mail-in voting order. It's unconstitutional. It's illegal. Refuse it.

On March 31, Trump signed an executive order directing the US Postal Service to stop delivering mail-in ballots to anyone not on a government-approved list. The Postal Service would receive "Mail-in Absentee Participation Lists" created by Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.

The Postal Service would then have the final say over whether your ballot gets delivered to an election official. If you're not on the list, your ballot goes in the trash.

This is Trump trying to personally control who gets to vote in November.

On Tuesday, 37 Democratic senators led by Chuck Schumer, Gary Peters, Alex Padilla, and Dick Durbin sent a formal letter to the USPS Board of Governors demanding the agency refuse to implement the order.

Their language was unambiguous: "The Constitution provides no role for the President in regulating federal elections. And no statute delegates to the President any authority to regulate elections or voter eligibility either, including via USPS. By issuing the executive order, however, the President is attempting to unconstitutionally consolidate power to personally regulate American elections."

Then the senators went further: "For over 250 years, the Postal Service has bound our country together with a constitutionally recognized mail service, and for 250 years, the American people have democratically elected their leaders. Any attempt to effectuate this order would violate the Constitution, break these bonds, and threaten the foundations of American democracy."

This is Democrats telling a federal agency to disobey a sitting president's executive order. Publicly. In writing. Because they believe the order is illegal.

They have good reason.

More than 20 Democratic-led states have sued to block it. The Democratic National Committee has sued. Voting rights groups have sued. And here is the punchline that nobody can ignore: Trump himself voted by mail last month in a Florida special election. He signed the order, then used the thing he's trying to ban.

The timeline is simple. Trump lost in 2020 and blamed mail-in voting. He is losing support in 2026. His approval is in the mid-30s.

Republicans just lost Virginia by a landslide. Thirty-eight GOP House members are retiring. And the man who said Republicans would "never lose a race for 50 years" if mail voting was banned just tried to ban it.

This is what it looks like when a president tries to steal an election in advance. And 37 senators just drew the line.
