As people get older, they may remember the basics, such as changing the batteries in their smoke alarms frequently, but the means and ability to do so might pose a challenge. If you have a senior parent or older adult that you visit, touch base with them about the fire safety equipment that they have in their home. Take a moment to check that they still have their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, verify that the alarms are less than 10 years old, and then test these devices to ensure that they work properly. Also, take a look around the home to ensure that the paths of egress in their home are relatively clear.

Fire departments in your area have programs to help seniors with their fire safety equipment. For information about programs in the city of Johns Creek - https://johnscreekga.gov/departments/fire/community-safety/
