Fire codes are written because of lessons learned—often at the cost of lives. They don't exist because something might happen; they exist because something did happen.

This incident, not very far from us, is exactly the type of tragedy we work every day to prevent.

The Village's rental registration program, implemented in 2025, exists to identify rental properties and, where rental occupancy is a permitted use, help ensure those dwellings meet New York State's minimum fire and life safety requirements. Working smoke alarms, compliant means of egress, occupancy limits, and other safety requirements are not arbitrary regulations—they are standards developed from real-world incidents with the goal of preventing them from happening again.

No code or inspection can eliminate every risk, but proactive inspections, code compliance, and responsible property maintenance save lives, protect firefighters, and help make our community safer.

The owner rented out single rooms so firefighters didn’t know how many people lived in the home. Renting the rooms appears to violate city codes, the chief said.

Originally known as "Decoration Day", it has now evolved into a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to remember all American military personnel who have died in any conflict.
Today we reflect on those who made the supreme sacrifice to preserve our freedom.

Today, 7 members of the Johnson City Fire Department, along with several members of our community, were recognized at the 2026 American Red Cross Real Heroes Event.
They received the “Fire Rescue” award for their actions during a residential structure fire on November 18, 2025.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Johnson City firefighters responded to a reported house fire with entrapment. Members of Group C immediately went to work locating the victim and, despite heavy fire conditions, removed him from the structure where he was transported by EMS for medical treatment.
We are proud of the professionalism, courage, and teamwork displayed that morning, and grateful to see these efforts recognized.

Thanks for having us!

Today was VERY exciting in the office if you ask me.

A really nice group of firefighters stopped by to inspect the office, and not only did they make sure everything was safe, they also let me check out the fire truck. Honestly, I’m considering adding “Assistant Fire Chief” to my resume.

10/10 experience. Lots of new friends, big truck, important sniffing opportunities, and I only barked a little.

Thank you to the firefighters for being so kind and making my day.

Members of the Johnson City Fire Department are currently participating in a Rope Rescue Operations Level course—an essential prerequisite for advanced swiftwater rescue training. This hands-on program is being hosted in Johnson City, and instructed by the New York State Academy of Fire Science, bringing top-tier instruction to our area. Throughout this week and next, our firefighters are training alongside members from neighboring departments, strengthening regional coordination and enhancing our ability to respond to complex rescue situations safely and effectively.
