We have some new residents on campus for the summer… a mama snapping turtle has laid her eggs right in front of the Kahn studio building! It must be all of that creative energy flowing through campus. Stay tuned for more updates as the summer progresses!

The sign reads:
Here is the site where a female snapping turtle laid her eggs on June 18th, 2026. Snapping turtles travel a far distance to lay their eggs often searching for soft or loose soil. Snapping turtles will typically dig down 4-8 inches and lay 20-80 eggs. Once the clutch has been laid, the snapping turtle will recover the hole and head back to where she came. Depending on soil temperature, we can expect hatchlings to emerge between 7-9 weeks. We put this cage here to protect the clutch from predators such as skunks or raccoons.

This past week, our staff had a pop up show in our gallery. It was so wonderful to gather and discuss our talented staff. Thank you Leila and our intern, Joe Darling, for curating this show and for a great conversation!

Last Thursday, we had the honor of hosting the Johnson Elementary 6th grade class for a special reading of their writing. 6 students read their work to VSC residents and staff. The rest of the class had their work displayed on boards around the dining hall.

Staff member, Charlotte Reber, talked to the students about the release of her book which discusses the video game Dragon Age II, and what it's like to be a writer. They had many serious questions about how to get their work published ASAP!

Thank you to Liz Kauffman, Charlotte, and Johnson Elementary for putting this together. We sure have some talented young writers here in Johnson!

We are profoundly grateful for the support from FEMA and our congressional delegation. This marks an important milestone in Vermont Studio Center’s recovery from the devastating 2023 flood, ensuring that we can restore what was lost but also strengthening VSC for the future.

It allows us to continue to be an economic driver for Johnson as we provide artists and writers from around the world with the time, space, and community they need to further their work.

Thank you for highlighting our story!
