Pennsylvania DEP has declared a statewide Code PURPLE 🟣 Air Quality Alert for particulate matter for Friday, July 17, 2026.

Wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota will impact Pennsylvania creating code purple concentrations of PM2.5.

Young children, elderly, and those with respiratory problems should avoid all outdoor physical activity.

Many areas in the U.S. Midwest and East Coast, including Elk County, experienced a haze of smoke from the wildfires raging in Canada.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a Code Red, upgrading to a Code Purple, Air Quality Alert for Elk, McKeen, Cameron, Jefferson, Clearfield, Warren, Potter, Forest, Clinton, and Center County due to the smoke on Thursday. PADEP has issued a state wide Code Purple Air Quality alert for particulate matter for Friday, July 17. Wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota will impact the state, creating code purple concentrations of PM2.5.

A Code Purple alert means the air quality has reached very unhealthy levels. In Code Purple conditions, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems should avoid all physical activity outdoors. Everyone else should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.

While the smoke lasts, residents are encouraged to:

Limit prolonged outdoor activities and strenuous exercise.

-Keep windows and doors closed when possible
-Use air conditioning or air filtration systems if available
-Stay hydrated and monitor yourself for symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or eye and throat irritation.
-Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone with respiratory or heart conditions.

Firefighters, EMS personnel, construction workers, and anyone who works outdoors should take extra precautions while operating in these conditions.

If you are experiencing severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, or other serious symptoms, seek medical attention immediately or call 911 in an emergency.
