Every call starts with a voice.

This week, we proudly recognize the incredible men and women of the Rensselaer County Emergency Communications Center—our 911 dispatchers, the true first first responders.

When you dial 911, they are the calm in the chaos. The steady voice guiding you through what may be the worst moment of your life. They are the ones who gather critical information in seconds, make split-second decisions, and ensure that the right help gets to the right place—fast.

But what many don’t see is everything happening behind the scenes.

Our dispatchers are simultaneously managing multiple radio channels, coordinating police, fire, and EMS responses across 41 fire departments, 14 ambulance agencies, and 10 law enforcement agencies. They are tracking units, relaying life-saving instructions, prioritizing emergencies, and adapting in real time as situations evolve. They handle the routine—and the unimaginable—often within the same shift.

They talk callers through CPR.
They help bring babies into the world.
They keep responders safe with critical information.
They are the lifeline between those in need and those responding.

And they do all of this with professionalism, compassion, and unwavering focus—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

This is not just a job. It’s a calling.

To our dispatchers: The Bureau of Public Safety is incredibly proud of you. Your dedication, resilience, and commitment to serving this county do not go unnoticed. You are the backbone of our emergency response system and the first line of defense for every resident and visitor in Rensselaer County.

To our emergency services partners: You know better than anyone the value of a great dispatcher. Take a moment this week to say thank you—to recognize the voice on the other end of the radio who has your back every single day.

And to the public: If you have ever been helped by a 911 dispatcher, we encourage you to share your story or simply take a moment to express your appreciation. A few kind words go a long way.

From all of us at the Bureau of Public Safety—thank you to our dispatchers for everything you do, often without recognition, but never without impact.

Very sad and tough day for the Johnsonville family. Today we unexpectedly lost our brother and friend. Tony has been a valued firefighter and EMT to the community for many years. As I write this, I find myself at a loss of words knowing my friend is gone. All I can say is rest easy my friend, you will be missed. We will take it from here.
