Did you know that World War II officially ended on September 2, 1945? V-J Day (Victory Over Japan) is recognized on September 2 when the surrender documents were signed by the Japanese and General MacArthur aboard the USS Missouri. Years later, controversy developed over celebrations of the day deemed, by some, as offensive to Japan, now one of our closest allies, and mixed feelings about the devastation of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Visit the Gold Star’s World War II exhibits and contemplate the wartime sacrifices of Iowa men and women. A military nurse exhibit will have a Grand Opening on October 10.

Did you know that Atlas intercontinental ballistic missiles were once located near Missouri Valley, Iowa? From 1960 to 1964, ICBMs were in place in horizontal shelters ready to be raised to launch position upon alert. Dispersal across the Midwest assured a retaliatory strike, if alerted, based upon the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction, M. A. D. The 549th Strategic Missile Squadron was in the vanguard of Cold War ICBM units until deactivation in December, 1964. Come visit the Gold Star’s newly expanded Cold War exhibit.

There is a new Veterans Walkway at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Walk along the path on Expo Hill and learn about Iowans' military contributions. Thank you to our wonderfully knowledgeable volunteers who created 19 of the plaques. DAR created the American Revolution marker. Check these out before the Fair ends this weekend!
