Last week, the Somerset County community joined me in paying tribute to our fallen firefighters at the Remember Me Rose Garden near Shanksville. I cannot think of a more perfect place for all of Pennsylvania to memorialize the firefighters who we have lost.

Twenty-five years ago, Somerset County started down the path of becoming America’s county because our communities boast men and women of action. When Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville during 9/11, the people of Somerset County began to act. They got their children out of school and went and immediately began to help others. Residents gathered together because we didn't know what was happening that day, but we knew whoever was inflicting harm on us was not going to hurt anyone else in this County. We were holding the line.

Fast forward a little bit, nine coal miners were trapped deep underground outside of Sipesville. Men and women acted with skill, bravery and urgency to somehow drill exactly where they were trapped hundreds of feet underground—finding the proverbial needle in the haystack—thereby saving nine men. The people who live here don’t hesitate, they act, so what better place to honor our fallen firefighters who live by that same mantra.

Special thanks to Diane Ginter, who lost her husband to a fire in 2021, for being the driving force behind this memorial. I had the opportunity to speak at this wonderful event, which you can access by clicking here. https://pagopvideo.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/534771509.mp4

Thank you to everyone who joined me for my Night Out event with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. It was great to see so many outdoor enthusiasts come together and talk about issues such as the Purple Paint Law, bear and grouse management, and spring turkey season. I appreciate the Game Commission for providing valuable feedback about our concerns. The work continues to uphold Pennsylvania’s rich outdoor heritage.

Today, House Democrats set a dangerous precedent by failing to find a legislative solution surrounding sentencing for second-degree murder convictions. In March, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled mandatory life-without-parole sentences for second-degree murder are unconstitutional – giving the Legislature 120 days to act on the Commonwealth’s Crimes Code. That put the deadline at July 24, which is tomorrow. Despite the Senate passing a bipartisan measure, the House Democrats amended it to give judges discretion regarding sentencing guidelines and insert language to allow prisoners with medical conditions out of prison.

Today, the House passed legislation that would result in the immediate tax cut of utility bills by nearly 6% - thanks to the Metzgar amendment. By adopting my measure, we would return real money back to you as ratepayers immediately because you need it now. House Bill 2224 now heads to the Senate.
