Why Do They Patch the Road…Then Grind It Off?

Ever see crews patch a road—only to grind it away later before paving? It might seem pointless, but every step has a purpose.

First, they patch weak or damaged areas of the existing pavement. This strengthens the road and fixes problem spots so the new surface has a solid foundation.

Then comes milling (grinding), where the top layer of asphalt is removed. This is key to:

🔹 Create a smooth, even road surface
🔹 Remove worn or damaged pavement
🔹 Align heights at driveways, intersections, and curbs
🔹 Prep a clean base for fresh asphalt
🔹 Improve durability and long-term performance

Think of it as resetting the surface before the final finish. It’s not just about adding new asphalt—it’s about building a smoother, stronger, longer-lasting road.

So when you see patching, grinding, and paving all happening together, know it’s all part of making a better roadway.

🚧 Slow down in work zones, follow signs, and give crews space to work safely.

This afternoon Officers responded to a report of a vehicle crash on West Jersey Street.

As officers arrived and began investigating, the individual fled on foot from the area. Officers pursued the male, and after a short search, he was located and apprehended.

Thankfully, no officers or members of the public were injured during the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, and charges are pending.

We would like to thank the responding officers and LCSO Deputies for their quick response and professionalism in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.

🦣 100 YEARS AGO TODAY — THE JOHNSTOWN MASTODON 🦣

On August 12, 1926, something remarkable was discovered right here in Johnstown, Ohio—the remains of a prehistoric mastodon that had roamed this area thousands of years ago.

According to historical records, the mastodon had roamed this region more than 8,000 years ago. The discovery became a significant piece of Johnstown's history, and the mastodon was eventually excavated and preserved for display at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Historical accounts describe the mastodon as approximately 10 feet tall and more than 15 feet long, making it one of the most remarkable mastodon discoveries of its time.

Today, the mastodon remains an important part of Johnstown's identity. From our community's history to the Johnstown Police Department patch, Mastodons Ice Cream Co., and the Johnstown Stampede Run & Walk Club. The Mastodon continues to represent the strength, character, and history of our community.

Update: Work was flipped on this schedule this morning, Buena Vista is finished. Starting on Concord.

On 7/30/26 crews will be resurfacing Concord Rd & Buena Vista Dr. Morning work will begin on Concord Rd, they plan to keep one lane open but there could be delays getting on to Concord from connecting roadways. Buena Vista Dr. is planned for later afternoon, please keep the street free of parked cars. Crews will do their best to work quickly and reopen streets fully. Thank you.
