CITGO’s hazardous waste permit renewal in Lemont is currently open for public comment.

Our office has significant concerns regarding the proposed post-closure permit, including:
☣️Hazardous waste was left in place
💧Groundwater impacts
🔍Monitoring may be too limited
💨Indoor vapor/inhalation risk
🌍Impacts to Climate change
🕵Inspections intervals timing concerns

Community input matters. Residents deserve transparency, accountability, and strong environmental protections. I encourage everyone to review the proposal and make their voice heard during the public comment period.

With the General Assembly concluding its spring session, we secured several investments aimed at making life more affordable for Illinois residents.

Starting with education, we ensured $721.6 million in funding to maintain the Monetary Award Program (MAP), representing a $320 million increase since 2019, an 80% boost that helps more students across our state access higher education. 🎓

Over the coming days, I will be highlighting additional ways our legislation secured critical investments for Illinois families, including support for everyday costs, housing, and healthcare.

Yesterday, a representative from our office had the opportunity to attend Lockport Township’s Annual Senior Expo! It was wonderful connecting with residents and sharing information about the many services and resources available to seniors throughout Will County and across Illinois.

If you are unsure of how to access resources or where to go to help, feel free to contact our office. 🤝

I was able to help kick off summer this week at the Fountaindale Library free Ice Cream Social!🍦

To help students stay engaged in reading during summer break, our office has launched my annual Summer Book Club for children and students who live in the 43rd Senate District. Participants can read eight books of their choice, submit their reading log by August 14 to our office, and earn a sweet treat for their hard work!

Summer reading helps prevent learning loss, strengthens literacy skills, and encourages a lifelong love of learning. Thank you to our local libraries and literacy advocates for providing resources and opportunities that help young readers thrive. 📖

As the Trump Administration’s tax cuts for corporations and the wealthiest Americans continue to reverberate and threaten essential social services, countless working families across our state are facing an affordability crisis jeopardizing their stable access to food, health care, housing and education. State leaders have a moral responsibility to meet the needs of our constituents and protect the programs and services so many Illinoisans rely on.

This budget includes funding for programs that would help off-set some of the most devastating cuts and provide vital relief for those struggling—including the FRESH benefits program to provide EBT payments to households that lose or have reduced SNAP benefits due to federal work requirements, additional funding for safety net hospitals, and an increase in money for PELL grants for higher education. These measures may serve as a stopgap, but real relief will take far bolder action.

We were also able to secure a funding increase for Direct Service Professionals to address the chronic staffing issues and low wages seen in so many care facilities throughout our state. While this increase is an important step in the right direction, we must do more to ensure the workers caring for the most vulnerable members of our population, such as Community Care Program workers are provided the funding and support they need. I remain committed to working with my colleagues to fight for these workers to receive the compensation they need and deserve.

The budget includes several new sources of revenue meant to offset some of the most devastating cuts implemented by the federal government’s policies, including new taxes on digital ads, predicted markets, and social media that are a step forward in forcing large corporations and the wealthy to pay their fair share and will bring vital resources back to our communities. There are no new taxes on everyday people.

However, I am disappointed that the budget still falls short of decoupling our tax system from the federal government’s in a way that would substantially insulate our state from the devastation. While other states have made these policy changes to bring more tax dollars home to the working people who need them, Illinois is relying on half-measures that fall short of meeting this critical current moment.

In addition to the budget, the Senate passed several measures to prioritize people over corporate profits and keep generational wealth in the hands of families, not private equity firms, billionaires, or mega corporations, including an initiative I sponsored, House Bill 2783. The bill charges private equity companies a fee for buying up housing supply in bulk and dedicates that money to public housing development and rent assistance programs. This legislation seeks to stabilize housing access for everyday people and keep resources from being hoarded in the hands of wealthy investors at a time when affordability has reached a crisis point.

I remain committed to fighting for working Illinoisans and building policies that allow our citizens to thrive, not merely survive.

“As working families struggle to find affordable homes and rising demand continues to drive up prices, we have a responsibility to preserve our existing housing supply for people, not large corporate investors,” said Ventura. “Unchecked investor activity is pricing Illinoisans out of their own neighborhoods, and we need clear guardrails to restore balance.”

As we wrap up another legislative session, I want to thank the dedicated staff, advocates, community partners, and my colleagues who put in countless hours, including many late nights, to move important legislation forward. I’m so proud of the work we accomplished this year, and I’m grateful for everyone who showed up, spoke out, and worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of Illinois.

These superhero kids from the Illinois Revenue Alliance came to the Capitol this week with a powerful message: if we want strong public schools, thriving communities, and the resources families need, it's time for the wealthiest corporations and individuals to pay their fair share.

Our children shouldn't have to fight for fully funded schools, quality childcare, safe communities, and opportunity, but they're showing us how powerful it can be when we raise our voices together.

The real superheroes aren't billionaires. They're the kids, families, educators, and advocates working every day for a fairer Illinois.

We're in Springfield tonight fighting for a budget that supports our superheroes!

Yesterday, I was proud to stand alongside advocates, community leaders, and colleagues from both sides of the aisle in support of the POWER Act — legislation that would bring greater accountability to the rapid expansion of data centers and help protect communities from rising utility costs and other local impacts.

It was especially encouraging to see bipartisan engagement on this issue. As data centers continue to grow across Illinois, lawmakers are recognizing the need to address their impact on energy demand, utility costs, and local communities. During today's event, Senator Arellano joined advocates to listen to residents' concerns and discuss solutions, including his interest in ensuring "bring your own energy" requirements can accommodate a range of energy sources, including nuclear power. Senator Hills also joined on her concern that local governments should have the ability to set strong protections for their cities. Several democratic lawmakers joined the Sponsors including Rep Favar Dias and Rep Grasse.

Following the rally, I spoke with advocates from Joliet for a continued discussion on the need to finally protect our communities and stand up to big tech.
