PLAINFIELD SCHOOL SHOOTING AVERTED, LOCAL TEEN CHARGED

A male juvenile has been charged with attempted first degree murder, attempted making a terrorist threat, and several weapons charges, after the Will County Sheriff’s Office learned the juvenile was plotting a school shooting.

The charges stem from a Plainfield Township incident on 05/22/2026 around 12:50 p.m. when deputies were dispatched to the 2400 block of Helmar Lane for a male suicidal subject.

Preliminary investigation showed a family member pinned down the juvenile and dialed 911, after they discovered the juvenile was armed with a firearm. It was later learned that the juvenile was on his way to conduct a school shooting at nearby Grand Prairie Elementary school, when the family member intervened.

Deputies detained the juvenile who indicated to numerous first responders what his intentions were. Deputies recovered a G***k handgun, a backpack which contained multiple loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant, gloves, and other items.

Officials with the Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield School District 202 were contacted immediately on 05/22/2026, regarding this incident. For the remainder of that day, which was the last day of school, appropriate measures were taken at all school facilities, including an increased police presence.

The juvenile was taken to a nearby hospital where he was in police custody and was evaluated by medical professionals, after making suicidal and homicidal statements to EMS on scene.

This morning, 06/04/2026, the juvenile was released from the hospital and into police custody for the following charges.

Counts:

Attempt First Degree Murder
Attempt Making a Terrorist Threat
Unlawful Possession of a Handgun
Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
Possession of Firearm Ammunition Without Requisite FOID Card
Unlawful Possession of Weapons
2 Counts of Unlawful Use of Weapons

He was subsequently transported to River Valley Justice Detention Center, pending initial court appearance on 06/05/2026.

Keeping our communities safe is a shared responsibility. If you have concerns about suspicious activity, we encourage you to contact the Will County Sheriff's Office at 815-727-8575.
