Spring in Oklahoma means warmer weather… and, like it or not, storm season. Here’s some important information about how the Town of Jones handles tornado emergencies so everyone knows what to expect and how to stay safe.

Tornado Sirens
• Sirens will sound only when Jones is inside the tornado warning polygon or during the scheduled noon test on Saturdays.
• If you hear the sirens and it’s not noon on Saturday, take immediate precautions and seek shelter.

Important to Know
• Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outside. They are not meant to wake you up at night or alert you indoors.
• Please make sure you have another alert system such as a weather radio, weather app, or phone alerts to notify you while inside or asleep.

Saturday Siren Tests
• The Saturday noon test will be canceled if there is a thunderstorm or tornado watch in effect or if there has been freezing precipitation.

Additional Activation
• Oklahoma County Emergency Management also has the authority to activate Jones sirens if they determine it is necessary.

Public Tornado Shelter at Jones Elementary
• Jones Elementary School is the only facility designated as a public tornado shelter for the Town of Jones.
• The entrance is located on the southeast corner of the building, accessible from Montana Street.

Important Shelter Notes
• The shelter is not available to the public during school hours.
• If a tornado warning occurs near dismissal time, buses and students may be held in place, and the shelter will not be open to the public because it will already be full of students. Please plan alternative shelter options during these times.

Pets
• No pets are allowed in the shelter at Jones Elementary. No exceptions.

Staying informed and prepared is the best way to stay safe during Oklahoma storm season. Take a few minutes now to review your family’s severe weather plan so you’re ready when storms roll in. Stay safe, Jones, Oklahoma!
