To all of the concerned citizens that message or call me about children being unsafe on scooters wanting a city ordinance that stops them from riding im not doing that. While I understand your concern taking the scooters is not the solution. Please do me a favor. Let the parents and kids in your community know about the Jonesboro Police Department Scooter Safety Class. Please refer back to our previous post for the details. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that identify them and we will contact the parent and or child. Louisiana has a law and that’s good enough. Louisiana RS 32:300.1.1

Also Consider donating safety gear to the police department for these children. We are accepting biking helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, body lights and safety vests. Donations from the community go a long way.

They may not be our biological children but as a town/ community they are still kids, our future and we do not want to take everything from them. Many already feel like there is nothing to do. I would much rather see them outside riding scooters, fellowshipping with friends, staying active, and making good clean memories than sitting inside all summer idle.

As adults and as a community, we should guide them, teach them safety, and support them instead of taking activities away from them. There is a way to do anything. JPD will be out all summer riding and being visible with them. I encourage community members to do the same. Please let’s lead them instead of taking everything away from them.

Please excuse the typos.

Chief Smith.
