⚑️🌩️ LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK 🌩️⚑️
πŸ“… June 21–27, 2026

Did you know lightning strikes the United States millions of times each year? While fatalities have decreased thanks to increased awareness, lightning remains one of the leading weather-related hazards and can cause serious injuries in a split second.

⚠️ Know the Risks
β€’ Lightning kills about 30 people in the U.S. each year.
β€’ Hundreds more suffer life-altering injuries.
β€’ Most lightning-related incidents occur during outdoor activities.

πŸ›‘οΈ Protect Yourself
βœ… When thunder roars, go indoors.
βœ… Seek shelter in a fully enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle.
βœ… Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.

🚫 Avoid
β€’ Trees, tents, and picnic pavilions for shelter.
β€’ Water, windows, electronics, and concrete surfaces during storms.

πŸ’‘ Fun Fact: Lightning can strike the same place multiple times. The Empire State Building is struck by lightning approximately 25 times each year!

🌦️ Summer storms can develop quickly. Before heading outdoors, check the forecast and have a safety plan in place.

🚧 REMINDER: ACCESS 5 CLOSURE 🚧

The Access 5 Playground, Splash Pad, and Pavilion at Craighead Forest Park will be closed June 24–26 while crews complete necessary maintenance and repairs.
Safety is our top priority.

Due to the nature of the work being performed, the entire Access 5 area will be closed to visitors during this maintenance window.

We understand temporary closures can be frustrating, especially during the summer months, but these improvements are being made to help ensure the area remains safe and enjoyable for everyone who uses it.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our hardworking Parks team works to maintain and improve these facilities for the community.

🚧🌊 TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN 🌊🚧

Heavy rainfall can create dangerous road conditions in a matter of minutes. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways, even if the water appears shallow.

⚠️ Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet.
⚠️ 12 inches of moving water can carry away a small car.
⚠️ 18–24 inches of moving water can sweep away larger vehicles, including trucks and SUVs.

πŸš— If you encounter a flooded roadway:
➑️ Turn around
➑️ Find an alternate route
➑️ Never drive around barricades
➑️ Stay informed of local weather conditions

Your destination can wait. Your safety can't.

β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’› Celebrate Juneteenth. Celebrate Freedom. β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’›

Today we honor Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, the day when the last enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a day to reflect on our history, recognize the resilience of generations, and recommit to the promise of liberty and justice for all.

As we observe this important day, we encourage our community to learn about its significance, honor those who came before us, and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy today.

🌟 Happy Juneteenth from the City of Jonesboro. 🌟
