When Seconds Count, They Show Up: SLFD Wins National EMS Award
The Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office proudly recognizes Sandy Lake Fire Chief David Squyres, Michelle Squyres, Sean Littleton and Sara Murphy, who were recently honored with the USA Emergency Medical Service Commitment to Excellence Award. This recognition, presented during EMS Recognition Week, highlights their unwavering dedication to patient care, accountability, and cooperation across emergency medical services.
Fire Chief David Squyres began his service with the Sandy Lake Fire Department at just 16 years old and has now dedicated 36 years to protecting the community. In 2020, he joined the department’s board and was appointed Fire Chief in 2021. His leadership has strengthened the department’s capabilities and expanded its service to the parish.
Two years ago, several members of the volunteer fire department made the commitment to obtain their EMS licenses, further enhancing the emergency response resources available to Catahoula Parish. Their work extends far beyond firefighting. Sandy Lake Fire Department and Jonesville Fire Department operate the only Jaws of Life equipment in the parish, providing lifesaving vehicle‑extrication capabilities.
Often first on the scene, volunteers remain until all needs are met. Once law enforcement arrives and emergency medical care is no longer required, they continue assisting by directing traffic, securing scenes, and supporting any task necessary to ensure public safety. Many of these volunteers work long hours at their full‑time jobs, only to remain on call through nights, weekends, and holidays, performing duties the public rarely sees but always depends on.
The Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office extends sincere appreciation to all parish fire departments, AMR paramedics and EMTs who serve our communities daily. Their combined efforts provide everything from comfort to the frightened to lifesaving medical intervention when seconds matter.
Our parish is safer because of individuals who feel the calling to serve as emergency responders. Without their dedication, we would face greater losses of homes, businesses, and most importantly, loved ones.
