April is Child Abuse Prevention Month đź’™

Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and protected. This month, we join together to raise awareness, support families, and help build brighter futures for children in our community.

Prevention starts with all of us. By working together, we can create safe, supportive environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Today, we joined the Southwest Virginia Children’s Advocacy Center, the Kinship Navigator Program, the Lee County Extension Office, the Lee County Department of Social Services, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, Healthy Families with Mountain Empire Older Citizens, and Ladies of Lee to plant blue pinwheels at the Lee County Courthouse in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The pinwheels serve as a meaningful reminder of our shared commitment to protecting children, supporting families, and working together to ensure every child in our community has the opportunity to grow up safe, supported, and heard. This marks the third year of the pinwheel planting in Lee County. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event possible.

The Lee County Victim Witness Program participated in the CHILDREN’S CLOTHING AND BLANKET DRIVE, hosted by the Ballad Health Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program. During medical forensic exams it is typical for clothing to be collected as evidence. This drive assisted in providing clothing and blankets for childhood sexual assault survivors who are seen in a Ballad Health hospital.

Due to inclement weather and in an effort to keep everyone safe, Lee County Victim Witness will be closed tomorrow, Monday January 26. As Always, if you need immediate assistance call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 276-346-7777.

January is National Stalking Awareness Month. Stalking can be incredibly scary, and even dangerous, and it's often a tool used by abusers in order to maintain power and control over current or former partners. Stalking is also a crime in every single state and U.S. territory, and victims deserve support, resources, and safety.

In many states and territories, victims and survivors of stalking can get a restraining order, whether or not they know their stalker, and whether or not the stalking happens online or in person (or both). Learn more about the laws in your state or territory: https://buff.ly/UXKENxt

In many states, you can file for a restraining order against anyone who has stalked or harassed you, including online. It can be helpful to keep track of the stalking, including phone calls, drive-bys, texts, voicemails, and emails.
