Ryan Jackson Joplin City Council

Ryan Jackson Joplin City Council My name is Ryan Jackson, and I am working to be the next Zone 3 Joplin City Council Representative.

Understandably residents and businesses are frustrated with the construction work along East 7th Street. Council members have asked our city manager to speak with MODOT about this, and here are the updates we can share.

First, it is important to understand that this is a MoDOT project, not a City of Joplin project. While city officials continue to advocate for residents and businesses, MoDOT is responsible for the construction, project management, and contractor oversight. This is just the beginning of the work set to be complete in 2028, and they have only begun the work on sidewalks and curbs.

MoDOT representatives met with a few local business owners to discuss concerns related to access, communication, parking, visibility, construction quality, and project timelines. According to MoDOT, maintaining access to businesses remains a top priority. Contractors have been directed to keep at least one entrance accessible whenever possible, reopen entrances during non-working hours when appropriate, and improve the placement of equipment and vehicles to increase visibility for businesses and intersections.

MoDOT has also addressed concerns regarding contractor communication and customer service. Additional discussions have been held with contractors, personnel changes have already occurred, and MoDOT will continue monitoring complaints and project performance. They have also reiterated that contractors are not permitted to use private property without authorization from the property owner. If you are a business owner that deals with this issue, reach out to MODOT and if that doesn't work let a council member know and we'll work to get you a direct contact.

Again the project remains scheduled for completion in December 2028. While early utility work has presented challenges, MODOT believes progress will improve as those conflicts are resolved. Night and weekend work may be considered if needed to keep the project on schedule.

One positive development is that MODOT plans to begin issuing bi-weekly project updates starting the week of June 29. These updates will help residents and business owners understand where work is occurring, which contractors are involved, and what impacts can be expected in the coming weeks.

This project has been difficult for many businesses, customers, and commuters. While the short-term inconvenience is significant, the long-term improvements to one of Joplin's most important transportation corridors will benefit our community for years to come.

While in DC I noticed a Congressman had the exterior of his office honoring fallen officers. Absolutely gut wrenching to see some of them, one was a husband and wife. I kept looking until I found Joplin Police Department officers Cpl Ben Cooper and Officer Jake Reed. Glad to see they are honored for their sacrifice. Thank you Congressman Troy Nehls.
