🔥 EXTREME HEAT IS COMING — AND OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS EACH OTHER. 🔥

Beginning Sunday and continuing through Saturday, temperatures in our area are expected to climb above 100°F.

For many of us, that means turning down the thermostat and staying inside. But for people experiencing homelessness—or anyone without reliable air conditioning—extreme heat can quickly become dangerous and even deadly.

The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center will be open as a Cooling Shelter for people AND their pets throughout this extreme heat. ❤️🐾

We will provide a safe, cool place to rest, cold drinks, meals and snacks, and a place where people can simply get out of the heat. To do that for an entire week, we need our community's help.

🧊 ICE IS ESPECIALLY NEEDED!
We anticipate using approximately 4 large bags of ice every day—about 28 bags for the week.

Even a small donation helps. A loaf of bread. A package of hot dogs. A case of Gatorade. A few bags of ice. When enough neighbors each give a little, we can do something very big together.

Minnie Hackney Community Service Center has always been rooted in the belief that community takes care of community. During dangerous weather, those words become especially important.

No one should have to sit outside in 100°+ heat wondering where they can find water, food, or a safe place to cool down. And no one should have to choose between getting out of the heat and staying with their pet.

Our doors will be open 11 am-7 pm. Help us make sure we have what we need when people walk through them.

🌞 Help Us Keep Our Community Safe During the Heat Wave 🌞

Beginning next week, we’re expecting a long stretch of dangerous heat, with the heat index climbing above 100° for several days.

To help keep people safe, Minnie Hackney Community Service Center will be open every day from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm during this extreme heat. We need our community’s help to make sure everyone who comes through our doors has something to eat and drink.

We are currently in need of:
• Bread
• Lunch meat
• Hot dogs

• Fresh fruits and vegetables
• Bottled water
• Pre-sweetened Kool-Aid
• Peanut butter
• Jelly
• Snack foods

We are also looking for animal crates. If you have one that you no longer need, we would be grateful to put it to good use. Many of our community members have pets, and we want to help keep them safe, too. If you would like your crate returned, please label it with your name and phone number.

The Giving Branch Awards $30,000 Grant to The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center to Expand Community Access and Services

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center has been awarded a $30,000 community grant from The Giving Branch, the charitable foundation of Flat Branch Home Loans, to improve accessibility and expand critical services for individuals and families in the Joplin area.

A public check presentation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at the Flat Branch Home Loans office, 2131 E. 32nd Street, Joplin, MO 64804. Members of the media and the public are invited to attend.

The grant will fund the installation of a stairlift, making the Center's second floor fully accessible for the first time to seniors, individuals with disabilities, parents with young children, and others who have been unable to use the space because of the building's staircase.

The project will also prepare the upstairs area to serve as The Giving Branch Warming & Cooling Auxiliary Center during periods of extreme weather, providing a safe, welcoming refuge for women and children. Throughout the rest of the year, the newly accessible space will support expanded community services, including medical clinic visits, a community library and reading area, office space, educational programming, support groups, and other services designed to meet the growing needs of the community.

"This grant represents far more than a building improvement," said Nanda Nunnelly, President of The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center. "It is an investment in people. Thanks to The Giving Branch, we are removing a barrier that has limited our ability to serve our neighbors. We are honored to name this new space The Giving Branch Warming & Cooling Auxiliary Center in recognition of their extraordinary generosity. Their investment will provide safety during extreme weather while creating opportunities for healthcare, education, and community connection throughout the year."

For nearly 80 years, The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center has served as a cornerstone of the Joplin community by providing meals, showers, laundry facilities, emergency assistance, and connections to housing, healthcare, and other supportive services. Opening the second floor will significantly expand the organization's capacity to serve women, children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and others seeking assistance.

"We are incredibly grateful to The Giving Branch and Flat Branch Home Loans for believing in our mission," Nunnelly said. "Their generosity will have a lasting impact on our community for generations to come. This gift is more than a stairlift—it is a pathway to greater access, greater dignity, and greater opportunity for everyone who walks through our doors."
