With extreme temperatures in effect again this week and no significant rainfall in the forecast, the City of Joplin is currently under a burn ban.

According to the Joplin Fire Department by order of the Fire Marshal, all open burning – including recreational and cooking fires – have been banned within the city limits of Joplin. This ban will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and there
is measurable rainfall across the entire region that will allow for dry conditions to improve.

Over the past few days, there have been numerous fires that have occurred that quickly grew out of control due to the dangerous weather conditions. All citizens of Joplin are asked to abide by this ban and refrain from any activity that could result in an uncontrolled
fire.

For more information, contact the Joplin Fire Department at 417-623-0403.

The Joplin Fire Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Team will conduct a series of water rescue and boat operations trainings this Friday evening at McIndoe Park in Joplin.

The trainings will be held from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will include multiple realistic training scenarios. The team will be practicing advanced boat handling, rescue maneuvers, and emergency response operations. The trainings are
designed to enhance the capabilities of rescuers during water-related emergencies.

During the trainings, residents and visitors could notice a significant increase in boat traffic and water activity, which will create larger-than-normal waves on the water. Boaters, anglers and other recreational users of the waterway
are encouraged to exercise caution and be aware of training activities occurring in the area during these hours. The team will be working to minimize disruptions while conducting the scenarios.

Firefighting is a demanding career that calls for unwavering courage, fast-thinking, and experience. All too often, it is also strictly volunteer – according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, only 12% of firefighters across the state of Missouri are full-time, paid professionals.

But thanks to a carefully curated educational curriculum and strong career benefits, those dreaming of becoming a professional firefighter are being drawn more often to the City of Joplin, where they are equipped with diverse skills to save lives when the stakes are high.

πŸš’ 8 weeks of EMT training (cadets must pass the national EMT exam)
πŸš’ 10 weeks of Fire I training (entry-level), Fire II training (command and control), & Hazardous Materials Certification Training (cadets must pass the certification)
πŸš’ 6 weeks of Finishing School (developed by the department and designed to instill mastery level skills)

β€œThe training is extensive because we want them to be ready for anything,” says Dustin Lunow, Assistant Fire Chief. β€œIt has become more of the standard for fire training to be taught in-house. We drill extensively to get them comfortable being uncomfortable. We want them to successfully mitigate whatever they are against.”
