After a hot and dry summer, we’re glad to say the burn ban is lifted.

That said, outdoor burning should still be done responsibly. If you’re planning a controlled burn, be sure to get your burn permit beforehand and take the necessary precautions to help keep our community safe.

🔥 No burning is allowed after sunset.
🔥 The burn pile must be at least 50 feet from any structure.
🔥 An adult must attend open burning at all times.
🔥 The person attending open burning must have means of extinguishment available at the burn location.
🔥 Citizen complaints of burning will be investigated and illegal burning operations will be issued a summons to City Municipal Court.

🎉🚒 The Joplin Fire Department has won a generous federal grant that will provide funding to hire new firefighters faster than we anticipated.

Following the overwhelming voter approval of Proposition B, the Department planned to add staff to keep up with increasing call volume. This week we received word that the Department has been selected to receive a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

🧑‍🚒 The $800,000 grant is designed to be combined with a contribution from the City, giving the department an opportunity to hire six new firefighters and to have their salaries covered for the first three years.

SAFER grants were established by the Department of Homeland Security in 2005 to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, "front-line" firefighters available in their communities.

👏 This is the first time the Joplin Fire Department has received this award from FEMA. City Manager Nick Edwards said, “This grant is a huge win for the City of Joplin and the Joplin Fire Department. Our Fire Department will be better staffed, and we will be able to improve our focus on the needs of our citizens in terms of fire prevention and protection. I’m incredibly proud of the Department for finding and earning this opportunity.”

🚒💙 Thank You, Missouri American Water!

Today, the Joplin Fire Department was honored to receive a $1,000 grant from Missouri American Water in support of our ongoing commitment to public safety.

Missouri American Water shared that many departments use these grants to provide smoke detectors and other safety resources to their communities. They also expressed their appreciation for the Joplin Fire Department's applications, which consistently demonstrate how these funds support firefighter training and enhance public safety for the residents we serve.

We're grateful for community partners like Missouri American Water who invest in safety, preparedness, and the communities they serve.🔥🚒❤️

We are extremely grateful for the rain that was received last weekend, but unfortunately, it is not nearly enough to pull us out of dangerously dry conditions. We are still not allowing burning in the city of Joplin, it is extremely dangerous to do so, and it will take a substantial amount of rain to make up for the heat wave we have experienced this summer. Unfortunately, it won't be long until leaves begin to fall which will further impact the fire conditions for the area.

With extreme temperatures in effect again this week and no significant rainfall in the forecast, the City of Joplin is currently under a burn ban.

According to the Joplin Fire Department by order of the Fire Marshal, all open burning – including recreational and cooking fires – have been banned within the city limits of Joplin. This ban will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and there
is measurable rainfall across the entire region that will allow for dry conditions to improve.

Over the past few days, there have been numerous fires that have occurred that quickly grew out of control due to the dangerous weather conditions. All citizens of Joplin are asked to abide by this ban and refrain from any activity that could result in an uncontrolled
fire.
