Boats, like the Erie Canal itself, changed over the years. The original packet boats, about 60 ft long, had no engine and required a mule or two to tow on the towpath. As time went on, and the canal became more prosperous, the boats were built larger to carry more cargo some reaching the limit of 100ft long--the length limit to fit in an old Erie Canal lock. They sometimes were driven tandem with a team of horses along the towpath. Still later, as steam engine's safety improved, boat captains switched to these to transport passengers or inspect the canal as in the above photo. Finally, requiring neither mule nor steam, gasoline-powered motor boats used the old Erie Canal in its last glory days before it was drained through the village in 1917 and the Seneca River replaced the place to race your boat as summer 1918 brought a new year and a new canal. Over 100 years later, motorized boats still enjoy these waters on a hot summer day🛥☀️
