It is a day to honor the dedication, sacrifices, and contributions of firefighters worldwide.
We are proud of our firefighters at Geary County Rural Fire and those agencies we have the privilege of partnering with.
But did you know? . . .
There is no greater longer-running example of volunteering in U.S. history than the volunteer fire service.
Volunteer firefighters represent 85% of all of our nation’s one million plus firefighters.
About 90% of Kansas is protected by volunteer fire departments. Kansas has more than 600 fire departments. Only about 30 of those (all in communities of 10,000 or more) have full time paid staff.
Approximately, 16,000 firefighters serve here in Kansas, but at least 13,000 of them are volunteers.
Nationwide, it is estimated that volunteer firefighters save the American taxpayer $37.2 billon dollars a year in labor cost.
Thank you to those who serve our department and everywhere.
We truly appreciate your sacrifice and dedication!

May is Wildfire Awareness Month.
As the weather becomes warmer and wildland vegetation, or fuels, begin to dry out, it is time to plan for the wildfires. During a wildfire, embers cause most home ignitions.
Please review below how you can do your part to prevent wildfires and know what to do if there is one.

Just before noon on Tuesday, 9-1-1 Dispatch received numerous calls about spot fires east of Junction City in the area of mile post 313 on I-70. As fire units got closer, several large smoke columns were observed. Geary County Fire requested assistance from Grandview Plaza Fire, Riley County Fire. The fires were found to be on the north side of I-70 and due to the strong southerly winds, the fires were racing north. This was on the Konza Prairie Research area. Konza fire crews were also fighting the fires. Upon arrival, three main fires were located. Riley County Fire was assigned to the east fire, Geary County Fire and Grandview Plaza Fire were assigned to the center fire, and the Konza crew along with a Geary County Fire unit took care of the west fire. Units used direct fire suppression and controlled backburning to control each of the fires.
Additional resources including Ft. Riley Fire and the Dickinson County Fire Task Force was requested and once on scene, were assigned to assist with fire suppression. Shawnee County Fire Task Force was headed our way, but was cancelled before arriving. Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Kansas Forestry, and Kansas Fire Marshal's Office, and Geary County Sheriff's Department were also on scene. Units were on scene until about 4:30pm.
Rough estimates is over 1300 acres were burned during the fires today. It is believed that the fires were caused by a dragging chain on a moving vehicle.

Since Friday, Geary County Rural Fire Department responded to 7 runs. It included:

Friday- 5:00pm- Humboldt Creek Road East - 60 acres burned from a controlled burn of 1 acre. Mutual Aid partners Alta Vista Rural, Dwight Fire, and White City responded and assisted. Units cleared the scene around 8:30pm.

Saturday- Training from 9:00am till about 12:00pm. During this, units were dispatched to the area of Skiddy Road and Red Road. Several burning hay bales that that the personnel assisted the owner with extinguishing. This was from a previous burn.

7:49 pm - Units dispatched to the area of Rolling Hills Drive for a leaking propane tank feeding a residence. The tank had been overfilled earlier in the week, and the heat of the day caused the tank to release some pressure. Propane company responded and units stood by. Cleared the scene at 9:20pm.

8:38 pm- K-244 Hwy- grass fire threatening a structure and heading north from the property. NO burn permit was issued for this fire. Units dealt with containers of old tires on fire, large trees on fire, and numerous pieces of refuge and abandoned items scattered in the tall grass making maneuvering very tough. Units left the scene at 00:15 hrs and then spent about another 1/2 hr putting the trucks back in service for the next call.

9:10 pm - McGeorge Road- Carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Unit arrived and determined it was a faulty monitor. Cleared the scene at 9:33pm.

Sunday - 6:35 am I-70 mile post 313 for several spot fires. Trucks responded and applied water to the smoldering grass piles. Units cleared the scene at 8:00 am.

9:15 am - Unit returned back to K-244 to extinguish some smoldering areas. They remained on scene until about 10:45 am.

10:00 am - Volunteers returned back to the station to make sure all the trucks and equipment were ready to go, which included fuel topped off, pump water tank full, drinking water on each truck. With all of these calls, the firefighters went through several cases of drinking water and Gatorade. They left to go home around1:00 pm to wait for the next call/page.

We appreciate all of our volunteers who respond to help us out with these fires. They take time off work, are away from their families, and may times miss events with their spouse and
children.

We are still looking for additional volunteers to come be part of our team. We need help across the rural area of Geary County, which is everything but the cities of Junction City, Milford, and Grandview Plaza. You can visit with us and pick up an application at 236 E 8th in Junction City.

At approximately 1:10pm on Monday, Geary County Fire was dispatched to the area of I-70 and K-177 in eastern Geary County for a semi on fire. Mutual Aid from Riley County Fire was requested. Upon arrival, the rear tires on the semi power unit were on fire and impinging on the cab unit. Units used pre-connect hose lines to extinguish the fire. The fire never reached in the inside of the cab. The trailer was being used to transport a large excavator. The fire never reached the equipment.
Then at 2:30pm fire units were dispatched for a vehicle fire on I-70 milepost 302 east of Marshall Airfield. The vehicle had a small fire under the hood which was extinguished. Due to being in a construction area, traffic was backed up for about 3 miles eastbound.
These two fires follow three fire calls that the department responded to on Sunday to include assisting Junction City Fire at the scene of the apartment complex fire on West Ash Street.
