South Llano River State Park has begun to see more Rio Grande Wild Turkeys as summer comes to a close! These turkeys tend to be seasonally elusive, spending the summer in smaller flocks before they return to roosting sites and their larger winter flocks.

They can most commonly be spotted in early morning foraging for native grasses, forbs, insects, nuts, seeds, and various fruits/berries, just after leaving their tree roosts in the cooler months of fall and winter.

We want to give a huge shoutout to our state parks intern this summer, Jordan Ortega! He truly has hit the ground running since he started here in May. Jordan has helped out all over the park, from caging pecan saplings to protect them from invasive species, to learning about park operations!

Jordan has helped with leading and developing interpretive programs, checking in park visitors at HQ, invasive plant management, flood cleanup, turkey brood surveys, etc! Additionally, he was able to work alongside biologists in both the inland fisheries and wildlife division to learn more about their work.

Jordan has already accomplished so much in just a few months this summer and we will miss him when we returns home. He will be starting his junior year at Texas A&M Texarkana, majoring in Biology with a minor in environmental science. Stop by South Llano River State Park to say hi to our awesome intern before the summer is over!

Texas State Parks has once again risen to the occasion and shown the true meaning of teamwork. We want to highlight Adam and Shelby from Blanco State Park, Shannon and Bryce from Bastrop State Park, Alex from Inks Lake State Park, and Jimmy and Brad from our Region Maintenance Team, as well as our park hosts Evelyn, Lee, Bill and Carla. Their immediate response to the flooding in our park is why we are able to welcome our visitors back so soon after. They worked long and hot days through countless obstacles with us this week. THANK YOU from the South Llano River State Park Team.

In addition, we want to thank our Friends Group, Friends of South Llano River State Park, for contributing to our clean up crew’s safety this week. Through donations raised, they provided ice, water, Gatorade, and snacks to help us power through the cleanup.

This past week has shown why Texas State Parks are such amazing places.

SLRSP Park Update- July 23, 2026

We are excited to announce that South Llano River State Park will reopen Friday, July 24th! Thanks to our hardworking staff and support from Bastrop State Park, Blanco State Park, Inks Lake State Park, and our Region Maintenance Team, we have been able to clear the debris from the flood that required our continued park closure.

While the park will be open, some areas will remain closed. The fishing pier at Buck Lake, access to shoreline under the bridge, .37 miles of the River Trail along the Eastern property line, and .16 miles of the River Trail connecting with Buck Lake are closed. In addition, our staff has placed caution cones and signage in areas along the river where there is no longer fencing. Please respect these areas and signage, as they have been placed for our visitors’ safety.

In addition, we are asking that our guests use caution if they choose to take part in any water recreation activities. While the water is clearing up, there is still some murkiness remaining. In addition, as with any flood, the river has changed course. If you are visiting us again, areas you may be familiar with may now be unrecognizable. The flood has also carried and deposited a large amount of debris. Some of this debris is clearly visible, while other hazards may remain unseen under the surface of the water. Precaution should be taken with all river recreation!

We can’t wait to welcome our visitors back to the park! See you soon!
