WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE RE-SCHEDULED TO BETTER INFORM THE PUBLIC AND ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION

(JUNEAU) – January 31st, 2023. The Alaska House Majority Caucus is thrilled to announce that the Special Committee, Ways and Means, which hears bills and reviews the processes regarding state revenue and taxes will be held at six o’clock PM starting this Wednesday, February 1st’ 2023.

Speaker of the House Rep. Cathy Tilton stated “We want the people of Alaska to know that this is your Capital. We are bringing transparency back to the House and we encourage the public to participate in committee hearings and meetings. This is the first of several initiatives the House Majority is engaged in to better accommodate the public and facilitate participation.”

“We understand for most Alaskans that work a full-time job, it’s not always possible to participate or even listen in, particularly live.” Stated Ways & Means Chair Rep. Ben Carpenter. “We want members of the public to be part of the conversation. We believe, by scheduling meetings late in the evening, more Alaskans will have the opportunity to testify during meetings and are more likely to listen in to the information provided.”

Rep. Carpenter went on to say; “I have three specific goals for this Committee: First, to bring spending and revenue into balance. Second, to protect the services that the state provides, and third, to provide economic stability to the State of Alaska. I strongly urge the members of the public to actively pay attention and contribute to this important process.”

The Ways & Means Committee Meetings can be viewed on AKL.tv https://akleg.gov/index.php or on Gavel Alaska https://www.ktoo.org/gavel/ Numbers to call in to testify will be provided when the meetings are open for public testimony.

ALASKA HOUSE REPUBLICAN MEMBER REP. DAVID NELSON RECEIVES CSG 20 UNDER 40 LEADERSHIP AWARD

ANCHORAGE – The Council of State Governments (CSG) has recognized Representative David Nelson, R-Anchorage, as a recipient of the 2022 CSG 20 Under 40 Leadership Award. The prestigious award honors emerging leaders and their commitment to their respective constituents and communities. Recipients have demonstrated solid leadership and concerted efforts to truly represent the members of their districts. Recipients hail from across the country.

Rep. Nelson was elected at 24 and has had an effective freshman term passing legislation HJR 16 and HB 125 and serving full time in the Army Reserve as a Second Lieutenant.

Representative Nelson stated, “I am honored to be recognized along with other effective leaders across the nation, particularly as a freshman legislator, for my work and collaboration with colleagues to pass legislation that will help the military community in Alaska.”

“It is my distinct privilege and honor to nominate and support Rep. David Nelson of the Alaska state house of Representatives for the Council of State Government’s Top 20 Under 40 award. I don’t believe there is anyone more fitting for this award. In his first term in the Alaska State House, he was able to pass several pieces of legislation instrumental to his constituents.” Stated Alaska House Minority Leader, Representative Cathy Tilton.

Founded in 1933, CSG is a nonpartisan organization that brings state officials together to learn from each other and to craft solutions to today’s public policy challenges.

Alaska Senate President, Sen. Peter A. Micciche said this about Rep. David Nelson “During his first term in the legislature he was able to pass legislation important to current active-duty military and veterans across the state. This was done as a member of the minority caucus, showing David’s ability to cross party and organization lines to build a consensus of support. Watching his efforts from my perspective as Senate President, I know he has a bright future in the Alaska Legislature.”
Award recipients will be honored at the 2022 CSG National Conference December 7th - 10th, 2022.

Several members of the Alaska House Republicans attended the groundbreaking of what will be Alaska's largest solar farm. This project is a great example of a private/public partnership helping to lower costs to consumers.

Celebrated the groundbreaking of what will be Alaska’s largest solar farm located in Houston, Alaska. It will be 8.5 megawatts and power roughly 1,400 homes. Congratulations to Renewable IPP on their successful planning and development of this project. Once they complete it next summer, the solar power will benefit MEA members. This project helps diversify our energy mix without costing more money or increasing rates for our members.
