Last week, MXAK joined maritime leaders from across the country at the 2026 National Harbor Safety Conference in Seattle — a powerful reminder that safer waterways are built through partnership and shared information.

A huge thank you to our friends at Marine Exchange of Puget Sound for hosting such a fantastic conference and bringing together so many voices from across the maritime. Despite the challenges of the partial federal shutdown and the absence of our Coast Guard partners, the conference showcased exactly what this industry does best: adapt, collaborate, and keep moving forward.

We were especially proud to see our Executive Director, Captain Steve White, step up as a keynote speaker, sharing the importance of capabilities, communication, and working together to build a stronger maritime safety net — in Alaska and beyond.

We’re grateful to share a positive update from a recent overdue boater report in Southeast Alaska.

As part of this response, the MXAK worked alongside the Coast Guard by issuing hourly Broadcast Notices to Mariners from our Marine Safety and Security Sites near Cape Decision, Coffman Cove, Petersburg, and Wrangell—helping raise awareness and engage the maritime community in the search.

This is what Alaska’s maritime safety net looks like—partnership, communication, and community working together when it matters most. We’re thankful for the safe outcome and proud to support efforts like these alongside the Coast Guard and our fellow mariners.

MXAK was honored to take part in a recent U.S. Senate subcommittee field hearing in Anchorage hosted by Senator Dan Sullivan. The hearing—“Arctic Security Infrastructure Imperative: Aligning U.S. Maritime Investments with National Security Needs”—focused on the growing importance of the Arctic and Alaska’s role in the nation’s maritime future.

MXAK Executive Director Captain Steve White joined a panel of distinguished Arctic and national security leaders, including representatives from the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security, the University of Alaska, the City of Nome, and retired USAF General Ralston.

Captain White highlighted how MXAK’s 24/7 Maritime Operations Center and statewide network of marine safety and security sites support maritime domain awareness, communications, and safety across Alaska’s vast and challenging waters.

We appreciate Senator Sullivan’s leadership and the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation about the future of the Arctic and Alaska’s maritime.

City of Homer Visits MXAK

Last week, we were proud to welcome the City of Homer’s Port & Harbor team to Juneau.

It was a fantastic visit with an engaged and knowledgeable crew — asking great questions, discussing real-world maritime challenges, and sharing stories of how MXAK’s capabilities have helped support operations. The discussions between the Homer team and Captain White was a reminder of what makes Alaska’s maritime community strong — open dialogue, mutual respect, and working together to solve problems.

The visit was made even more special with Homer Port Director Bryan Hawkins joining the group. As an MXAK Board member and strong advocate for the maritime, Bryan understands firsthand how partnership, communication, and shared situational awareness keep Alaska’s ports running safely and efficiently.

Fresh off hosting some 3rd and 4th graders, our temporary tattoos made a cameo appearance — and Bryan and Matt were good sports repping them. We call that a maritime flex!

Grateful for the visit and proud to support the ports, harbors, and mariners who keep Alaska moving.

“Critical Coverage for Alaska’s Waters”

At a recent U.S. Senate committee hearing, Senator Dan Sullivan spotlighted a key issue: the limited Rescue 21 coverage across our coastline—and the essential role the Marine Exchange of Alaska plays in closing that gap.

In his exchange with Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday, Senator Sullivan emphasized how MXAK's AIS, DSC, and VHF network has saved lives and should be supported through new Coast Guard investments in maritime domain awareness to achieve maritime domain dominance.

We’re honored to be recognized at this national level and remain committed to strengthening Alaska’s maritime safety net—together. Thank you, Senator Sullivan, for continuing to champion this important work for all who navigate our vast and sometimes unforgiving waters.

Want to see something cool? How about the sunrise in Antarctica this morning?

The Alaska-based research vessel SIKULIAQ reached Antarctica yesterday after a long journey from Alaska's Arctic, and MXAK's installed precipitation sensor and camera are live for your viewing pleasure. R/V SIKULIAQ, a 261-foot, ice-capable ship, is owned by the U.S. National Science Foundation and operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Mainly used in waters around Alaska and the Pacific Northwest for the past decade, this is the first time the ship will operate in Antarctica, where it will support three research projects. This past October, MXAK installed a camera and precipitation sensor onboard as part of a research and development program to measure and forecast freezing spray conditions.

Our crew has been enjoying watching them journey to the opposite side of the world and we wish their crew fair winds and following seas.

Stay tuned to follow their journey at: blueview.mxak.org

We’re honored to be featured in the Fall 2025 Proceedings, the U.S. Coast Guard’s journal on maritime safety and security.

In the issue, MXAK is highlighted in multiple articles—including a feature written by our team—underscoring how collaboration, information sharing, and maritime domain awareness help protect lives, property, and Alaska’s marine environment.

From closing communications gaps and preventing incidents, enhancing marine safety and security sites, to supporting search and rescue in remote waters and strengthening Arctic readiness through Arctic Watch, these articles reflect what’s possible when industry, government, and communities work together.

We invite you to explore the issue and learn more about how partnerships are shaping safer maritime operations across the Last Frontier.

Decked Out for the Holidays! ⚓🎄

Here at the MXAK, we’ve taken our work from the operations floor to the rooftop! This holiday season, our crew came together for a little festive fun — stringing up lights and decorating the office to make it shine like the beacon we strive to be.

It was more than just hanging lights — it was a team-building mission filled with laughter, collaboration, and a whole lot of holiday spirit. As we navigate the busy waters of the season, we’re reminded that little moments of joy and camaraderie light the way — just like the work we do together to build a safer, more connected maritime community.

Wishing you safe seas and bright lights this holiday season from all of us at MXAK! 🌟
