When you think about what it takes to run a city, technology is not always the first thing to comes to mind, but many of our cities rely on skilled information technology staff to keep their websites running, payroll functioning, and data secure. You may not see these employees out in public as much as other departments, but they are critical in many city functions. Say thanks to your local municipal IT employee!

When most people think about City services, they think about roads, utilities, parks, police officers, firefighters, or the front counter at City Hall.
Behind all of those services is technology, and behind that technology is the City and Borough of Sitka's Information Technology team.
Our five-person IT Department is fully staffed and works every day to support employees and operations across the organization. From public safety and utilities to permitting, payroll, communications, and public meetings, their work helps keep City services running smoothly for residents and visitors alike.
This quarter, the team successfully launched the City's new website, providing a more modern and user-friendly experience for the public. They are also working alongside other departments to expand city-owned network infrastructure, including conduit being installed during the Seawalk project that could help connect City Hall, Harrigan Centennial Hall, and the Sitka Public Library through a dedicated City network in the future.
Additional work includes upgrading core network equipment, configuring a new datacenter switch, and installing firewalls at multiple City facilities to improve cybersecurity, reliability, and resilience.
Much of what the IT team does happens behind the scenes, but their work helps ensure employees have the tools they need to provide the public services our community depends on every day.
It's another example of neighbors serving neighbors and community working for community.
