After 35 years of service in emergency response—and five years as Sitka’s Fire Chief, Chief Craig Warren retired on April 30.

From firefighting and EMS to dive rescue and search and rescue, Chief Warren has dedicated his career to serving the Sitka community with professionalism, leadership, and heart.

Please join us in thanking Chief Warren for his years of service and commitment to Sitka, and in congratulating him on a well-earned retirement. We wish him all the best as he looks forward to spending more time with his family and enjoying this next chapter.

Today the Senate has passed HB-78 and it now moves to the House for a concurrence vote before heading to the Governors desk. Alaskans are now one step closer to a return of a dignified retirement.

This week, your Alaska Fire Chiefs Association was in Washington, DC, with the Western Fire Chiefs Association to advocate for emergency services issues across Alaska and the West Coast. We met with Senators Murkowski & Sullivan and Congressman Begich. Representing Alaska were President Steve Rydeen (South Tongass Fire), Vice President Frank Bracken (Chena Goldstream Fire and Rescue) & Alaska Director on the WFCA Board Forrest Kuiper (University Fire Department)

The City of Unalaska is pleased to announce that Edward “Eddie” Athey has been selected as our new Fire Chief. Eddie brings more than 37 years of experience in fire and emergency services and previously served as Fire Chief here in Unalaska. He is expected to begin on or around March 25, 2026.
