Thousands of Alaskans Falsely Removed from Voter Rolls 🚨🚨

Last week, a number of Alaskans around the state reported receiving a letter that was dated mid-June, stating that they had been removed from the active voter list and that they must contact the DMV to verify their citizenship to be placed back on the voter rolls. The House State Affairs and Judiciary Committee held a joint hearing with the Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher, in part to learn more about this letter and the impact on the upcoming election cycle.

It was determined at this hearing that over 3,500 letters were sent out to voters to ask them to verify citizenship. Later, it was revealed that as many as 15,000 voters are actually being impacted. This is extremely concerning, as every eligible voter has the right to cast their ballot without unnecessary confusion or undue barriers. The improper removal of eligible voters from the voter roll, coupled with the short notice prior to the upcoming August primary election cycle is troubling. Our office is asking more questions about this evolving story.

Rep. Andrew Gray, an Anchorage Democrat co-chairing Wednesday’s joint hearing by the House Judiciary and State Affairs committees, said his office is being contacted by numerous legal citizens who have received the letter challenging their status.

"I have a lot of questions about that and I have colleagues who have also been getting reached out to by constituents who are also receiving these letters, where people are having to go prove their citizenship in order to vote," he said. "This is a matter of urgency."

NEWS: This Wednesday, the House Judiciary & State Affairs Committees of the Alaska State Legislature will hold a joint hearing to learn more about current candidate qualifications for appearing on a State of Alaska ballot.

The meeting comes after the Alaska Division of Elections removed a candidate from the ballot last month. The Alaska Supreme Court later ruled that he was eligible to run for office and ordered the DOE to include him on the ballot.

Testimony on Wednesday will be heard from Alaska Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher & Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom.

A legislative audit committee instructed the state auditor to investigate the past three years of process and legal compliance of the board tasked with developing policy and managing Alaska’s fisheries.

Rep. Louise Stutes, R-Kodiak and chair of the House Fisheries Committee, made the request for the special audit of the Alaska Board of Fisheries. The bicameral Legislative Audit and Budget Committee approved it at a hearing on Thursday.

“The breadth and frequency of stakeholder complaints about the Board’s process make it clear the Board has lost the public’s trust. As Chair of the House Fisheries Committee, I am compelled to act,” Stutes wrote.

She said the board has been “increasingly characterized as lacking transparency, unethical, and/or unlawful.”
