Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development

Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development Alaska is Open for Business! ALASKA IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Even today, large portions of Alaska remain untouched and unexplored.

The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development’s Mission is to Promote a healthy economy, strong communities, and protect consumers in Alaska. Alaska’s abundant natural resources drive the state’s economy, with tremendous potential for further discovery. Although we’re the largest state by land (2.5 times the size of Texas), we’re the smallest by population, offering immens

e untapped potential. Anchorage, home to one of the top five airports in the world for cargo throughput, is only 9.5 hours from 90% of the industrialized world, and 2-3 days closer to Asia by water; making Alaska the ideal location for international business. Did you know that Alaska is ranked #5 in the nation for economic opportunity, according to US News Best States 2019? Alaska doesn’t only offer immense economic opportunities. The quality of life is extremely high, as there’s something for everyone! Alaska is ranked #3 in the nation for overall health and happiness, while being ranked #1 for physical well-being, #2 for financial well-being, and #2 for health care quality. The following divisions are housed within the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development: Division of Banking & Securities, Division of Community & Regional Affairs, Division of Corporations, Business & Professional Licensing, Division of Economic Development, and the Division of Insurance. Every year, hundreds (if not thousands) of letters arrive at the office of the Commissioner in Alaska's Department of Commerce in Juneau from across the country, addressed to the "Alaska Division of Tourism." Most are from homeschooled families asking for maps, stickers, and Alaska resources.

There's just one mystery we'd like to solve: where are these kids finding us?

The Division of Tourism as a state-run office hasn't existed in its current form since around 2000. Following the passage of Senate Bill 107, Alaska made a deliberate shift to privatize tourism marketing, consolidating those functions under the Alaska Travel Industry Association the nonprofit that now runs Travel Alaska and promotes Alaska as a destination to the world. Today, DCCED focuses on economic development, business resources, licensing, investment, and consumer protection.

Somewhere out there, a homeschool curriculum still lists a state tourism office as the place to write. And apparently it's been circulating for a very, very long time.

Our team in Juneau has spent years carefully responding to each one, and we don't take that lightly.

We've blurred out the personal info to protect these young scholars, but we wanted to share just a couple. The curiosity, the enthusiasm for Alaska, the carefully written words. We'd love to welcome these kids and their families to Alaska one day.

So here's our question for you: Have you seen this curriculum? Do you know where this assignment comes from? Drop your theories in the comments. We are genuinely curious. 👇

Alaska's Division of Banking and Securities is hitting the road this month to meet Alaskans face-to-face, share resources, and help protect you from a fraud trend that's on the rise statewide.

Crypto kiosks (also called Bitcoin ATMs or crypto ATMs) are popping up in grocery stores, gas stations, and convenience stores across Alaska, including communities like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Soldotna, and Kenai. Scammers are using these machines to steal money fast, often by impersonating government officials, law enforcement, bank fraud investigators, or even a family member in trouble.

Here's what you need to know:

🚫 Government agencies, courts, and legitimate businesses will NEVER ask you to pay through a crypto kiosk.
🚫 Once money is sent, it is nearly impossible to get back.
⚠️ In Alaska alone, crypto kiosk fraud jumped from $36,779 in losses in 2023 to $917,758 in 2024. Nationally, adults 60 and older account for more than 85% of all crypto kiosk losses.

If you get a phone call asking for crypto as payment and something feels off, trust that instinct. And if you suspect fraud, report it at IC3.gov.

Stop by for a game of Financial Fraud Bingo, learn about the latest scams, and pick up free resources and tools to help you stay protected.

📍 Catch our team on the road this June:
📅 June 15 | Soldotna Senior Center
📅 June 16 | Homer Senior Center
📅 June 17 | Kenai Senior Center

Stop by to talk with our specialists and pick up resources to protect yourself and the people you care about.

🌊 Alaska's seafood, agriculture, and food businesses are competing in a global marketplace, and a major new federal financing tool just got a lot more powerful.

USDA and the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) have announced a historic partnership to boost American agricultural exports. At the center of it is the Financial Assurance to Revitalize Markets (FARM) Initiative, a modernized export credit guarantee program designed to help U.S. agribusinesses (including Alaska's seafood harvesters, processors, and food manufacturers) access financing when selling to international buyers.

Here's what changed under FARM:

📦 Flexible repayment: an 18-month payment option gives buyers more room to structure deals
🌐 Global banking access: regional restrictions removed, opening doors to more markets worldwide
✅ 100% payment guarantee coverage: so Alaskan exporters can pursue opportunities in higher-risk markets with confidence

Alaska's Office of International Trade wants to make sure our state's exporters know this tool exists. Applications are open through September 30, 2026.

On this day in 1977, construction of the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline System was completed with the final weld near Pump Station 3.

As Alaska marks the 49th anniversary of this historic achievement, we’re reminded of the vision and determination that helped connect our vast natural resources to the world.

TAPS remains one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in U.S. history and an enduring example of Alaska's ability to deliver world-class projects that support economic opportunity and responsible resource development.
