Our hearts are full. Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Hawaiian students from Halau Kamehameha Kapālama High School to the City Museum. Upon arrival they sang a beautiful song of gratitude. Then Director Beth Weigel provided a guided tour of the museum to highlight our local history and art. Before they left, we were gifted with another song, this time with dance. The museum was full of lucky tourists who enjoyed this spontaneous performance. The students are in Juneau this week to dance at Celebration. They will perform at 7:10 p.m. tonight (Thursday June 4) at Centennial Hall and again on Friday(June 5) at 12:45 p.m. at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall.

ON VIEW IN THE CITY MUSEUM--> Lily Hope's Chilkat Protector Masks

As described by artist Lily Hope, “the Chilkat Protector Masks lean on the strength of ancestors reinstating historical indigenous protection for all members of community inclusive of all genders, sexual expressions, and self-identity. This family of masks displayed together highlights the cultural significance of two-spirit people in Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian history. Historically, LGBTQIA+ and transgender persons have been storytellers and knowledge keepers. The Chilkat Protector Masks spark a multi-fold contemporary conversation by summoning strength through acknowledging all our ancestors’ calling for a reawakening of our cultural commitments to protect and serve our communities. They reinstate the significance of all community members and promote remembering that all people are worthy of protection.”

DID YOU KNOW?
At the City Museum, we care for about 100,000 items in our permanent collection which include objects (3-D pieces), photographs, and archival material (paper-based items).

Part of our permanent collection consists of 235 items connected to Lloyd Valentine Winter (1866–1945) and Edward Percy Pond (1872–1943), aka Winter & Pond. Winter and Pond were outstanding photographers who formed the Winter & Pond Studio in Juneau in 1894. During careers spanning more than fifty years, Winter and Pond compiled a vast catalog of photographs depicting the people and places of the North, particularly in Southeast Alaska and the Klondike. We are grateful to have several of their photographs in our collection.

Caring for historical photographs requires specialized handling and conservation training. Watch our informative 16-minute video created in 2020 during the pandemic. In this video, then Curator Niko Sanguinetti explains how to safely store archival items, provides history about Winter & Pond, and shows us an amazing Winter & Pond photo album from the museum's permanent collection. You can watch the movie here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDwpH4apY6g
