Fall Smoke Detector Maintenance
Now that fall is upon us, we all know that it’s time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors, but did you know it may be time to replace your detectors as well? Most detectors have a 10-year life according to the manufacturer expiration date; however, some detector sensors start to wear out as soon as 7 years. If you change your batteries and your detector continues to emit a non-emergent chirp, that indicates the unit needs to be replaced. Please note - detector expiration applies to both hard-wired and battery-operated units and if your detector is hardwired, it is recommended that an electrician should be called to install the new units.

Wendy Fleckenstein is usually the one behind the camera, but today we want to put her in the spotlight.

Wendy is our volunteer Fire Corps photographer, and she’s a fixture at community events, night trainings, and even incidents when she’s able. She loves this department and our people, and we feel the same way about her.

Recently, Wendy’s mom passed away. Even in her grief, she handed us a check at the visitation and asked us to use it to do something for our staff. She said she’s been given so much that she wanted to give back. That’s who Wendy is.

She’s also a heart transplant recipient, receiving her new heart in 2021. She fought through weeks in the hospital, determined not to let her 16-year-old donor down. Since then, she’s been an advocate for heart health, working with the American Heart Association and making the most of every day, watching her daughter get married, welcoming three grandchildren, and coming back to volunteer with Oshtemo Fire Department as soon as she could.

Wendy reminds us to take nothing for granted, to care for ourselves and each other, and to give back whenever we can. We’re honored to have her as part of our fire family.
