City offices will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. Here is how city services are affected:

The agendas are now available for the City Commission meetings on Tuesday, September 8.

The City Commission will meet as a Committee of the Whole at 5 p.m., followed by its Regular Business Meeting at 7 p.m.

The Committee of the Whole will receive a briefing on development and housing incentives for the proposed Rose III project at 116 W. Cedar St.

Items on the Regular Business Meeting agenda include:

Citywide sidewalk spot repairs to replace deteriorated sidewalks, driveway approaches, and curb ramps; improve ADA accessibility; and address tree-root impacts at locations throughout the city

A Brownfield Plan for Rose III, a proposed 71-unit rental housing development at 116 W. Cedar St. and 427, 431, and 433 S. Rose St., including 15 income-restricted units

Railroad crossing improvements along Kalamazoo Avenue to prepare for eventual eastbound traffic, including new flashing lights and gates at the Amtrak and Grand Elk crossings, as well as a new crossing surface to accommodate the planned pathway at an Amtrak crossing

A proposed purchasing-policy change that would require City Commission approval for contracts involving automated license plate reader technology

Proposed City Commission meeting-rule changes to restore public call-in comments, limit call-ins to the public-comment portion of meetings, and set a three-minute limit for both in-person and call-in speakers

Heads up: several railroad crossings will be closed for track maintenance in September and October.

The closures begin September 8 at Crosstown Parkway and continue at several locations through October 23. Each crossing will be fully closed at the tracks during its scheduled work.

Take a look at the map to see when crossings along your route may be affected and plan an alternate route.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – September 3, 2026 – A lane shift will occur on West Main Street between Acker Lane and West Main Court from Monday, October 5, 2026, through Friday, October 16, 2026, to accommodate water service installation for Kalamazoo College building construction.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to follow the posted detour route. If pedestrian access is impacted, a local pedestrian detour will be utilized. Access to all homes and local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

Save the date for our next Bulk Trash Drop-Off Days!

City of Kalamazoo residents can bring accepted bulk trash to Republic Services, 3432 Gembrit Circle, at no cost:

📅 Wednesday, September 30 | 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
📅 Saturday, October 3 | 8 a.m.–noon

These drop-off days are another option for getting rid of large household items and are also available to downtown residents, where curbside bulk trash pickup is notavailable.

The same material guidelines as curbside bulk trash pickup apply, and proof of City residency is required.
