The NWS predicts that Kalamazoo will see more frigid temperatures in the coming days. Windchills of -15 degrees are predicted on Friday and -10 degrees on Saturday.

There are several warming shelters and centers available for those in need. Shelters accommodate overnight stays and centers accommodate daytime use. Residents are encouraged to take refuge indoors during periods of extreme cold, snow, or freezing rain. Prolonged exposure to cold weather can quickly lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other dangerous cold-related medical conditions. According to the National Weather Service, exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 30 minutes with -18 degree windchills. Beware of Brushing Scam!

A recent scam has been showing up in many states. We have not had any local reports, but want to make residents aware before you are victimized.

A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.

Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.

The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters.

Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.

We give many thanks to the men and women of WMAC who have assisted in Regional operations over the years. They're much more than an air transport service and we will be working diligently with them on new communications pathways.

West Michigan Air Care will discontinue its helicopter service at Ascension Borgess Hospital and Bronson Healthcare.

Our thoughts, prayers, and hearts go out to the Michigan State Police.

Remember to move over a lane when there are lights flashing. And always pay attention to the road. It could save a life.
