Kalamazoo Township Breaks Ground on New Eastwood Fire Station
Modern, Energy-Efficient Facility to Enhance Safety and Emergency Response
KALAMAZOO, Mich., November 4, 2025 – Kalamazoo Charter Township officials broke ground today on the new Eastwood Fire Station, a modern, energy-efficient facility designed to enhance community safety, support firefighter readiness, and strengthen emergency response capabilities.
Located at the corner of Gull Road and Texel Drive, the new station will replace an outdated building and position the Township’s Fire Department to better meet current and future service demands.
“This groundbreaking represents more than just a new building—it represents our commitment to safety, efficiency, and responsible community service,” said Tracie Moored, Superintendent of Kalamazoo Township. “This new facility will assist our firefighters with the tools and environment they need to respond effectively when our community needs us.”
The project was made possible in part through a $1 million grant from the State of Michigan, helping the Township move forward with a lesser impact on taxpayers. Township leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving community goals.
“This project is a testament to what we can accomplish together when local and state partners unite around a shared goal,” said Lisa Mackie, Kalamazoo Township Clerk. “The new Eastwood Fire Station will stand as a symbol of partnership and progress for years to come.”
The facility is being designed with modern safety standards and sustainable building practices, including a geothermal heating and cooling system to reduce energy use and operating costs. The updated design will enhance operational efficiency and emergency response, ensuring firefighters can continue to serve residents with reliability and care.
“This new Eastwood Station will strengthen our ability to protect lives and property across the community,” said Jairus Baird, Fire Chief for Kalamazoo Township. “It’s an impactful investment that supports both our community and our firefighters.”
Construction is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2027.
