We at VEMS are entrusted to transfer many patients who are in the fight of their lives against cancer. Sometimes it’s to their first treatment, sometimes it’s to their last treatment, and sadly, there are times we are taking them home so that they may pass surrounded by their loved ones in an environment full of love and dignity.

This morning we were transporting a cancer warrior from the hospital to his daily treatment. I looked down and saw this on his wrist.

No other words are needed.

Today, CEO Brodie Verworn and EMS manager Michael Bedick went to the state capital in Helena to stand in front of the Montana Legislative Services Division to add their voices to the growing number of others to have Montana change the law to make EMS recognized as an “essential service”. Today’s topic was the legal aspects of EMS as it currently stands.

On a side note, most of those in attendance believed this was going to be a further discussion of making EMS essential. The chairwoman stated that this was not the case but those in attendance still let their voices be heard until chambers were cleared early due to the “violations”.

Brodie and Mike got to meet and speak with Tim Montana and his wife Danielle, who have thrown their celebrity behind this extremely importance cause. We will be back in Helena in January to continue to put pressure on those lawmakers to emphasize the importance of better prehospital care in our state.

DID YOU KNOW: Only 21 states including the District of Columbia recognize EMS as an essential service. The other 40 states including Montana, do not! This means that there are no tax dollars set aside specifically for EMS and the state and counties have to figure out solutions on how to treat and transport the sick and injured.
