On August 3rd, K9 Rosso and K9 Rico responded to an apartment complex in Kalispell to assist law enforcement with an assault with a weapon suspect who was barricaded in his apartment.  Based on details surrounding the incident, the Northwest Montana Regional SWAT team was deployed. Once SWAT arrived on scene, Rosso and Rico were paired with arrest teams around the apartment. After several hours, the suspect surrendered and was safely taken into custody.  Great job K9 Rosso and K9 Rico!

Training is an important and necessary part of our program.

As you can see in this photo, K9 Zora takes her training seriously! In order for us to be proficient, our unit spends countless hours every month, training at work and at home. This allows us to utilize our K9 partners more effectively in the field and help the community in the most impactful way possible. Keep it up K9 Zora!

K9 retirement isn’t always easy, especially for the handlers….

Vito and his handler have worked side by side for the last seven years as a team. Man’s best friend has a deeper meaning for those in this line of work. Vito has left a huge mark on the valley and has dedicated everything to serving with his handler. Although this is a sad day for our unit, we wish Vito the best during retirement and hope he enjoys his time at home. Thank you for your service K9 Vito!

Tired dogs, tired handlers and one of our favorite K9 cover’s.

During these two incidents, our unit was working to locate and apprehend a group responsible for numerous residential burglaries, with losses believed to be totaling over $1 million. Both of these pictures were taken after making successful arrests on members of this crew. Tracking through mud, muck and chest high water, Audie, Vito and their cover Deputy were exhausted after their hard work!

On August 3rd, K9 Rico and his handler responded to a suspicious military ordinance located in the basement of a residence in Evergreen. Out of an abundance of caution, K9 Rico was deployed on scene to confirm the possible explosive nature of the ordinance. K9 Rico alerted to the device, which prompted a response from the EOD unit at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls. Once EOD arrived on scene, they found the device to be a live MK24 aerial illumination flare from the Vietnam War era. The device was rendered safe by EOD and was found to contain four of Rico’s trained odors inside. Great job K9 Rico!

Happy National Dog Day to our K9 partners! Join us tomorrow evening at Big Mountain Ciderworks for pint night, supporting the Flathead K9 Foundation!

For those who are unaware, Flathead K9 Foundation was originally founded to provide financial assistance to the Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit. This foundation has provided funds to purchase many of our canines and a large portion of their equipment. Since its inception, it has expanded to assist both the Flathead Search & Rescue and North Valley SAR canine programs. Without this organization and the generous donations from the community, we would not have the programs we have today!

On July 31st, K9 Rosso and K9 Zora responded to an apartment in Kalispell to assist law enforcement with a suspect wanted for assault with a weapon. Once on scene, Rosso and Zora were utilized to help maintain containment around the apartment the suspect was occupying. Due to the violent nature of the crime and the weapons involved, the Northwest Montana Regional SWAT team was called to assist. Ultimately, the suspect was apprehended by Rosso and taken into custody. Great job K9 Rosso and K9 Zora!
