As of 8:00 this morning, the Chalker Park bathrooms have been closed due to vandalism and safety concerns for young children. Broken v**e pens and empty alcohol bottles were discovered in and around the bathrooms. Evidence of ma*****na and cigarette smoking was also discovered, with remnants of both left behind. Damage was done to soap and toilet paper dispensers, as well as restroom doors. Issues are occurring with both bathrooms. A portable restroom has been ordered, and will be delivered today. We will revisit opening the bathrooms in the near future. Surveillance footage is currently being reviewed.

ATTENTION VILLAGE RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES:

Infrastructure Alternatives, Inc. staff has scheduled flushing of the hydrants and water mains in the Village of Kalkaska. The system flush will occur over three weeks, Tuesday – Thursday: April 14th – April 16th; April 21st – April 23rd; and April 28th – April 30th.

• The first week of flushing will be performed in the areas between W. Mile Rd and Kalkaska St.
• The second week of flushing will be performed in the areas between George St and Elm St.
• The third week of flushing will be performed in the areas between Second St and First St, and Laurel St to Hyde St.

Flushing will be performed between the hours of 8:00AM-6:00PM.

Important: Your cooperation is needed to make the flushing program successful. Please note the following recommendations.
1. Avoid using water during the time period when water flushing will be performed in your area.
2. If appropriate, turn off and by-pass your water softening system the morning of when flushing is scheduled to be performed in your area. Do not return your softener to service until after you have flushed your water line (See number 4).
3. Turn off any automatic water systems, such as time-delayed dishwashers or timed lawn sprinkling systems.
4. One hour after the scheduled flushing is performed, prior to using water in your home, open the faucet closest to the point where the water enters your home. Allow the water to run into the nearest drain until it runs clear. If appropriate, return your water softener or automatic water systems to service.

If needed, there is no issue with using water while the water system is being flushed. If you do need to use your water during the scheduled flushing times, we recommend running water until clear before use.

During these flushing dates, it is a perfect time for customers to flush the plumbing inside of their homes/businesses if desired. To accomplish a proper flush throughout the plumbing in your home and your service line, open all of your faucets and let the cold water run for 10-15 minutes.

If you have any questions, concerns, or experience prolonged water quality issues,
please contact IAI staff at (231) 715-9407. (**PHONE NUMBER CORRECTED**)

Thank you for your cooperation.

Village Residents:

The Village of Kalkaska conducts and publishes a Water Quality Report annually. This report shows that the Village of Kalkaska municipal water supply is safe in accordance with EGLE (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) and the EPA (US Environmental Protections Agency). All of the items tested for were within the legal ranges allowed by both of these agencies.

The 2024 Water Quality Report is available at the Village Office and on the Village website. It is also published in the newspaper every year. A link to the 2024 Water Quality Report is posted below. Page 3 of this report shows the tested numbers for HAA5 Haloacetic Acid during the 2024 testing cycle. The test results showed that our HAA5 Haloacetic Acid was NOT at a level in violation of EGLE or EPA requirements. The 2024 report reflects the most recent testing cycle. 2025 testing will be completed in June of 2026.

We have become aware of Facebook posts stating we are investigating placement of soap in the Trout Fountain as vandalism, and are seeking the individual(s) responsible. This information did not come from the Village of Kalkaska or the Kalkaska Police Department, but rather from a third-party. We are aware that this occurs a few times a year, and no one is being sought.
