Shortly after WWI ended, the residents of Kane, PA wanted to commemorate the service of local veterans including those who died for their country. A local committee was formed on November 11,1918 and by Spring 1919 they had located a suitable granite boulder for a memorial monument in Venango County, PA. The boulder was moved by several rail lines before arriving in Kane in late June 1919. The mas
sive rock was then moved from the rail yard to its current location at the eastern point of Evergreen Park. A brass plaque was affixed with the names of all the men who had died while serving in WWI. The monument was dedicated at a huge public service on July 4, 1919 - just 147 days after the war had ended. After WWII, Korea, and Vietnam additional memorials were added. In 1976 this memorial area of Evergreen Park was officially designated as “Evergreen Memorial Point” by the Kane Borough Council. Annual Memorial Day Services are held there by the Kane VFW King David Post 1132 who regard this area as sacred ground. During the Global War on Terror, another monument was added to the park. The landscaping became overgrown, the ground was uneven, the sidewalks were cracked and upheaved. The lighting was poor and the area was not handicap accessible. In 2019 a local partnership was formed with the Kane VFW Post 1132, the Kane Borough, the Kane Parks Commission, and the Kane Area Development Center to raise funds to rehabilitate Memorial Point to create a beautiful, respectful area to honor our local veterans. In 2021, Memorial Day services were held at the new Memorial Point. In 2 years the community and donors raised $158,000 and local tradesmen created a beautiful new space! Donations are still being accepted for a Perpetual Fund to maintain the park. Checks can be made out to VFW King David Post 1132. PLEASE put Memorial Point at Evergreen Park in the Memo line of your check and mail to:
