Countywide Test of the Alerting System Wednesday April 22nd at 10:00 a.m.

Busy day today at Kankakee Township Fire.
FF. Ramirez, FF Holliday, and Chief Goodrich responded to Pembroke for a brush fire that spred to several structures.

Later that same crew had several fires along RT 17 that stretched over a mile and finally we had a small illegal burn in the Otto Fire District that we assisted with along with FF. Avent and Lt. Haynes.
While it may only have been 3 calls crews worked for over 6 hours to contain these fires and still completed all the work to get all of the apparatus used back in service for the next call.

While the weather may be nice please refrain from burning when high winds are present. Yes today we didnt have a Red Flag Warning but everything is extremely dry and we ask that you not burn carelessly. Even a 10 or 15 mph wind like today can cause extreme loss like we have seen over the past week or so.

Special thanks to Otto Township Fire Protection District and Aroma Fire Department for assisting us on our fire.

Addional searches will be completed in the area of River Rd today, please do not be alarmed.

Additional Search Efforts Underway in Storm-Hit Areas

Kankakee County officials are advising the public that there is a likelihood that many will observe additional search efforts on-going in the areas hit by last week’s storms. As mentioned last Friday (March 13, 2026), a 3-tiered approach of strike teams including K9s, Emergency Responders and Drones are canvassing the entire area hit by last week’s storms. It should be noted that while there are no active reports of any missing people, these efforts are to be absolutely certain that there is no one unaccounted for.

These strike teams will be going door-to-door speaking with residents to confirm everyone’s well-being and confirming that everyone is safe and accounted for.

In the event you know of a person in the area struck by last week’s storms and have not spoken with them, please call 9-1-1.

Storm update:
Several homes and business have been completely destroyed in the Kankakee Township Fire District following last night's tornado with dozens more damaged. Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy.

As of this morning only 2 minor injuries were reported from the storm.

Homes and businesses that are no longer habitable have had the gas meter turned off with the goal of removing any addional hazards and risks for injuries.

Comed will be working around the clock to restore power but it will take time, so please be patient and allow them plenty of room to work.

If you do not live in a house that was affected by the storm we ask that you PLEASE stay away from the area and allow the crews and homeowners to work!!

Please follow the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office page for addional updates on plans moving forward.

A special thank you to Otto Fire Protection District, Papineau Fire District, Limestone Township Fire Protection District, Reddick Fire Protection District, Kancomm, and the Kankakee County Sheriff's Department for all of your help during this disaster!

Gone but never forgotten.
The lives you touched and the memories you made will always be felt in and around the fire departments in Kankakee County but especially in your house at Kankakee Township Fire.

February 7, 2008 - LODD
Chief Matthew Hubly, 43
Kankakee Township Fire Protection District. IL
On February 1st Matthew had been shoveling snow at the fire station prior to attending a meeting regarding fire protection at an industrial facility. At the facility he became warm and diaphoretic. The Assistant Chief convinced him to let him take him to the hospital, but he became unresponsive before leaving the facility. He was transported to Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee where he arrived in full cardiac arrest. He was revived but succumbed to his injuries six days later.
