Kyle stepped outside for 30 seconds and came back looking like this.

Temperatures will be near 100° today, with the heat index possibly reaching 109°. The worst of it is expected around 5 p.m., and the humidity has officially chosen violence.

Drink plenty of water, limit your time outside, and please check on older adults, young children, neighbors without air conditioning, and anyone else who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

A few pop-up showers are possible this afternoon, but they may just turn the entire city into a steam room.

Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

And Kyle, energy drinks still do not count as hydration.

Today, we pause to honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Deputy Elijah Ming on the one-year anniversary of the day our community suffered an immeasurable loss.

On behalf of Mayor Christal Watson, the UG Board of Commissioners, and the entire Unified Government family, we remember Deputy Ming as a dedicated public servant whose unwavering commitment to protecting others reflected the very best of public service. Deputy Ming answered the call to serve with courage, integrity, and compassion, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire those who wear the badge and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

While a year has passed, the impact of Deputy Ming's sacrifice remains deeply felt. We continue to hold his family, friends, and his colleagues of the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office in our thoughts and prayers, recognizing that their loss is shared by our entire community.

Today, we not only remember how Deputy Ming passed, but we also celebrate how he lived with honor and an unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of everyone in Wyandotte County. His service will never be forgotten, and his legacy will forever be woven into the fabric of our community.

May we continue to honor Deputy Ming's memory not only with our words, but by supporting one another and striving to build a safer and stronger Wyandotte County that he worked so hard to protect.

Today, we remember, honor, and will never forget Deputy Elijah Ming 💙

One year ago today, our community suffered a heartbreaking loss with the line-of-duty death of Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Elijah Ming.

Although Deputy Ming did not wear a Kansas City, Kansas Police Department badge, he was family. In Wyandotte County, our law enforcement community is close-knit, and many of our officers had the privilege of knowing Elijah personally. Many also stood alongside him that day, and like so many throughout our community, continue to carry the weight of that loss.

Those who knew Elijah remember much more than the tragedy. They remember a deputy who was deeply invested in his community, who cared about young people, and who could brighten any room with his genuine smile. His passion for serving others and his commitment to making a difference left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Today, we pause to remember Deputy Elijah Ming, to honor his service and sacrifice, and to keep his family, friends, and our partners at the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office in our thoughts. His watch may have ended, but his legacy of service, compassion, and dedication to this community lives on.

We will never forget Deputy Elijah Ming.

🌡️ Mother Nature woke up today and chose violence.

This weekend is going to be HOT. Like…

🥵 Your steering wheel is a branding iron.
🥵 You start sweating before you finish reading this post.
🥵 The sidewalk is trying to cook your flip-flops.

Jessica said her makeup is melting off because of the heat and humidity.

Kyle said, “That’s called contouring.”

Kyle is no longer allowed to give beauty advice.

Seriously though, heat index values could reach 110°F from Saturday through Monday.

💧 Drink plenty of water.
🌳 Limit your time outdoors if you can.
👵 Check on your family, friends, neighbors, and pets.

Need to cool off? Find a cooling center here:

⚠️ Be sure to check the hours before you go. Some community centers are closed on Sundays and Mondays, but participating libraries, spray parks, and the Willa Gill Center have operating hours those days.

Stay cool, KCK. We’d rather wave at you in the grocery store than meet you because you thought mowing the yard at 3:00 p.m. was a good idea.
