Northeast High School is a 9-12 grade school. The four-story structure was built in 1914 at a cost of $500,000 and deemed one of the great structures of its time. In 1988, the interior of the building was renovated and a new gymnasium, weight room and locker rooms were constructed on the south side of the building. During one period of its history, Northeast was considered a magnet themed school-L
aw, Public Service, and Military (JROTC). Classroom spaces were constructed to support these themes such as a mock courtroom, judge’s chambers ,and jury room. Most recently a distance learning lab has been added. Today, Northeast High School houses a diverse population of nearly 1100 students with a teaching staff of 60. Northeast offers traditional high school courses, Advanced Placement and Dual Credit Courses. Students have opportunities to visit colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions and to participate in job shadowing and internships related to their career interests. Off-campus Career and Technical Education programs are available to students during their junior and senior years. At the top of the marble staircase to the second floor is a specially remodeled area which houses the many years of Northeast memorabilia organized by alumni members. Notable Northeast graduates include “Beetle Bailey” cartoonist Mort Walker, former FBI director William Sessions, and Disney animator Ub Iwerks, who is credited with creating Mickey Mouse.
