On 07/31/2026 Tyler Trusskey of Boy Scout troop 304, completed his Eagle Scout project.

As part of his project he collected and retired 104 national and state flags from around the Kansas City community to honorably retire. Two of those flags were from KUMCPD.

When KUMCPDs flags became too worn out to respectfully display we contacted Tyler and asked if he would retire them in an honorable and dignified manner. Tyler came to our department and was presented the flags along with a department challenge coin.
Tyler then took the flags and used them with other flags from across our community and gave them one last sign of respect for our country before being retired.
As part of his project he has created flag retirement boxes that will be placed at Maywood church, Sam's Club, and KCKFD to collect flags for future retirement ceremonies.

Thank you Tyler for all your hard work!

Earlier today, officers responded to reports of a loose chicken roaming the area. Thanks to the quick actions of our partners at Overland Park Animal Control, the feathered fugitive was safely located, apprehended, and taken into protective custody without incident.

No injuries were reported, and the suspect remained fully cooperative throughout the encounter. Efforts are now underway to reunite this adventurous traveler with its rightful home.

A big thank you to Overland Park Animal Control for helping bring this poultry pursuit to a successful conclusion!

FAQ Friday:
Why are the police called Five-O?
There are two prevailing theories regarding this slang term.
1. It is a reference to a popular television show “Hawaii Five-O” which is a fictional police drama set in Hawaii which is the 50th state of the US. Signified by the name “Five-O”.

2. Unmarked police cars in New York City used 5.0 liter engines. These unmarked cars has a 5.0 liter sticker on the fender. This led to look outs employed by gangs and drug dealers to call them “Five-O”

If you have heard a different theory post it in the comment section below
