When we created the Poverty Stoplight, we did it with human dignity in mind: ensuring that every family had the power to take control of their lives and map out their path to success.

Unbound, the largest implementer of our methodology worldwide, launched an incredible dashboard that connects thousands of global sponsors with real, measurable community progress. Together, families have already turned over 1.2 million self identified needs (reds) into greens in areas like housing, healthcare, and employment!

Seeing photos of May, Quenny, and Arwin in the Philippines, or reading about Gertrude's journey in Kenya, proudly holding their Poverty Stoplight "lifemaps," is proof that local solutions can drive massive global impact.

Congratulations to the entire Unbound and Fundación Paraguaya teams for reaching this incredible tech and human milestone!

💛 In the Philippines, a group of mothers turned $50 into a thriving business.

Gerlie's mothers group, called Peony, makes and sells dishwashing liquid to families and local retailers in their community. They meet once a month to mix, bottle and market their product together.

Each bottle costs roughly 54 cents to make and members sell them in the community while collecting a small profit as personal income. Any additional profit goes back into their savings program to help members with unexpected needs.

"None of this would have been possible without the guidance of Unbound staff and the continuous learning they provide through seminars and training," Gerlie said.

Mothers groups are the primary way parents participate in Unbound and it is through these groups that mothers learn to direct their families' paths out of poverty.

"We understand that our journey with Unbound will not last forever. Because of this, we see our livelihood as an important step toward sustainability". Gerlie, Mother of sponsored child and Peony group leader

From 2024 to 2025, over 30,900 families worldwide benefited from hygiene initiatives led by Unbound Agents of Change. One such effort unfolded in Manila, where local mothers partnered with their kids' school to address a critical need for clean handwashing facilities.

In the Philippines, where two-thirds of the poorest Filipinos still lack basic hygiene facilities, handwashing can reduce diarrheal diseases by 30% and acute respiratory infections by 20% (UNICEF Philippines).

With a $446 grant, the mothers worked with Mabolo Elementary School to plan, fund and construct a new handwashing station in just one week. “The handwashing area is vital for learners to stay clean and healthy. We are grateful to Unbound for making this possible,” said Principal Dr. Welmina D. Akol.

In late 2025, a $575 grant allowed the mothers to renovate a second station, adding three faucets and a roof. Today, Mabolo Elementary has four functioning handwashing stations, benefiting not only students and staff but also parents and the wider community.

Millions of children still lack access to basic handwashing facilities at school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2025 that 462 million children do not have access to a handwashing facility at school. In the Philippines, about two-thirds of the poorest Filipinos still lack access to basic hygiene facilities.

In Manila, a group of mothers decided to change that for their kids.

Mary Ann has been a parent leader for 11 years, guiding and supporting more than 30 sponsored families. When she saw that the handwashing stations at Mabolo Elementary School were broken and unusable, she took action.

“We believe this was the school’s most urgent need, as it directly supports the health and hygiene of the children in our community, as well as the teachers and administrative staff,” Mary Ann said.

Through Unbound’s Agents of Change, the mothers identified the need, crafted a proposal and used grant funding to repair the station. In just one week, they purchased materials, hired skilled laborers and completed the project.

This is what happens when families are trusted as leaders.

🙅 DON'T give clean water! Rather, we need your help to deliver opportunity, confidence and decision-making power. Through Unbound's Agents of Change, local groups of parents decide — what's the most pressing issue in their community? Some may choose to install a water tap. Others will build bridges, install latrines or repair schools. If we want to attack the issue of global poverty, we must provide people with more control over their futures.

Did you know...

Across 53 countries where data is available, women and girls spend 250 million hours
every day fetching water – over three times more than men and boys. That’s time that could be spent studying, earning, or leading. (UN Women/UNDESA, 2024).

This Agents of Change initiative in Rwanda is just one example of how giving mothers, fathers and community members power to create change, on their terms, benefits everyone in the community, not just Unbound members. With just one initiative, this community group impacted gender equality, community health and unity!

💛 Meet Zairen, a 7-year-old sponsored child in the Philippines with big dreams of becoming a teacher someday. Her mother works part time as a caretaker while her father works in maintenance. Together, they're supporting Zairen's education and nurturing her gifts.

During an Unbound Awareness Trip earlier this year, Zairen recited a beautiful poem written by her mother for visiting sponsors. She memorized every word and shared it with confidence, grace and joy.

Check out the poem in the comments and a photo of the handwritten poem here! 💌 Happy National Poem Day!

💛 Happy International Day of Happiness! Today we're celebrating the beautiful moments that make our hearts full 🥹 These moments remind us that happiness isn't something we find alone. It's created and nourished when we walk with one another, when we believe in each other's dreams and when we choose to see the dignity in every person.
