Shamarr fills his free time with painting and competitive sports like football and basketball. He also makes space for advocacy, working with teens in the foster care system who need a supportive adult by their side.

His story: “As a former foster child, I understand the impact of having a positive role model in your corner. I want to be that person for a teen going through a similar experience. Because of my own background, I prefer to work with teens, and have done so for the last six years. The commitment doesn’t take a ton of my time, just regular communication with my teen and their case team. I’ll help with homework, talk about their friends, catch a game of basketball, or text with them about their week. Being an active presence in their life is what matters.”

You don’t need special skills to be there for a child in your community. If you care, you’re qualified.

We’re looking to hire an additional Guardian ad Litem to join our mission of advocating for children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Jackson County.

In this role, you'll lead a multidisciplinary team—working alongside trained Volunteer Advocates and child welfare experts—to ensure every child has a voice and an advocate in court.

This role calls for someone who believes in family preservation, fights for just outcomes, and brings both legal expertise and genuine compassion to their work.
If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. Apply via the link below and include a cover letter sharing your motivation and values.

Join us for a community cookout! 🌭

Invite your friends and family. Because representation matters deeply to the youth we serve, bring the males in your life so they can ask their questions about becoming a volunteer advocate.

About 50% of kids and youth in Jackson County foster care are male, yet less than 18% of our Court Appointed Special Advocates are. When a kid sees someone who looks like them, who has navigated the same pressures, it changes things.

We’ll see you at the Jackson County CASA House (2544 Holmes Street, KCMO) on Saturday, May 30th. Expect complimentary food, beverages, and yard games. We’ll be hanging out from 12 - 3pm, rain or shine.

Meet Kara Strickler, Advocate Supervisor at Jackson County CASA! For 5 years, Kara has made a deep impact in the lives of youth in the foster care system.

Kara's days are anything but routine: communicating with volunteers, visiting youth, attending court hearings, and tracking down resources for families. Most of her cases are in Family Treatment Court, where she helps volunteers and families navigate a complex system. What keeps her going is watching her volunteers build meaningful, lasting relationships with the kids they advocate for.

When she's not an advocate, Kara is reading, going to concerts, browsing farmer's markets, or rewatching her comfort shows (Modern Family and The Good Place). And, she minored in music in college and hopes to get back to singing in a choir once she finishes her Master of Public Administration.

We're so lucky to have you, Kara! 🌟

Chanel–who started as a Court Appointed Special Advocate a year ago–shares her experience: “I was drawn to volunteer with CASA because I couldn’t ignore how much it matters for a child to have one steady adult truly in their corner. As a CASA, I get to show up consistently, listen, and help make sure a child’s needs and wishes are heard in court and in the systems around them.

This work has changed me too; it’s made me more patient, more hopeful, and more aware of how powerful a single voice can be.

Your voice changes their story, and I’m grateful that mine is part of it.”

CASA Volunteer Advocates are members of our community from varying backgrounds. You don’t need any special experience to make an impact.

Who’s ready to kick off the summer with a BBQ? 🌭

On Saturday, May 30th, we’re hosting a free community cookout. Enjoy complementary food, beverages, and yard games.

Most importantly, this is a great opportunity to hear from the CASA staff. Ask your questions about the role of a Volunteer Advocate and learn how representation matters to the youth we support.

Bring your friends and family. We encourage you to invite the males in your life who are curious about this process.

The event will run from 12:00 to 3:00PM. (Rain or shine)

We’ll see you at the Jackson County CASA House! (2544 Holmes Street, KCMO)

Here are a few kind words from Patty herself:

“CASAs play a special role in supporting children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Volunteering as a CASA is a rewarding experience. You CAN be the voice for a child in need.”
