Jackson County CASA will miss our friend, John Yorke, who passed away on August 25th, 2026. John served on the Board of Directors of Jackson County CASA for six years, and served on the finance committee for many years after his Board service.

In 2016, we recognized John and his wife Carol with the Light of Hope Award for their long standing dedication and support of Jackson County CASA. Our thoughts are with Carol and with Ruth and Michael and their families.

Jackson County CASA is looking for a compassionate Case Specialist to join our mission of advocating for children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Jackson County.

In this role, you'll be the first point of contact for children newly appointed to our agency — meeting them early, explaining the court process in a way that makes sense to them, and investigating their circumstances so their needs are represented from day one. Working alongside our Staff Attorneys, you’ll help make recommendations on placement, family time, and services.

We're looking for someone who is organized, empathetic, and grounded in client-centered advocacy.

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. Apply via the link below and include a cover letter sharing your motivation, values, and readiness for this role.

This summer, Aetna volunteers gathered at CPKC Stadium and packed more than 350 backpacks with school supplies donated by CVS Health. Thanks to Aetna Account Director Margaret Huff, 100 of them were designated for Jackson County CASA.

On Friday, Aetna Account Manager Tracy Guernon pulled up with a truckload, and our team jumped in to help unload alongside Margaret and Tracy.

Children in foster care are often unequipped with the supplies they need for the school year ahead. These backpacks mean a child can walk into their classroom with everything they need!

Thank you, Aetna and CVS Health, for your generous support!

Jessica works as a financial consultant, and loves to read about sociology, politics, and history. She’s also training for a marathon! As a transplant to KC, she wanted to deepen her community involvement, which led her to CASA.

During her three years as a Volunteer Advocate, she’s had four cases, noting, “I’m drawn to the tangibility of the impact on the life of a child. A lot of the young kids I’ve worked with literally cannot speak for themselves. Knowing that a little bit of my time can help change their outcome is what keeps me coming back as a Volunteer.”

Court Appointed Special Advocates are everyday people doing what they can to support a child in foster care.

Meet Johna Thatcher, Case Specialist at Jackson County CASA!

For 3.5 years, Johna’s role has included introducing children and families to CASA during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Her days take her all over the metro area visiting children, attending case planning meetings and hearings, and working with attorneys to advocate for kids in court.

When asked what she loves about her role, her answer left us inspired: "What I love the most is, obviously, the children. I consider it a privilege to be a calming presence and a consistent person when everything feels uncertain in their lives. I also enjoy working with amazing people with a common passion and desire to genuinely help people."

Outside of work, you'll find Johna at her 11-year-old's many activities, reading, crafting, watching true crime documentaries, and spending time with her family. She describes herself as compassionate, helpful, and trustworthy, and her guiding value says it all: everyone matters, and no one is defined by the worst things they've done or that have happened to them.

We're so grateful to have you on the team, Johna! 💙
