R7 LEPC Emergency Planning and Response Conference

R7 LEPC Emergency Planning and Response Conference Conferences are held in odd-numbered years. The 2017 Conference, held July 20-22 in Overland Park, Kansas, was the 11th time this conference has occurred.

The Region 7 LEPC Emergency Planning & Response Conference is a bi-annual conference for emergency planners, first responders, industry, and local, state, and federal government agencies in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and nine tribal nations. The LEPC/TERC Emergency Planning & Response Conference brings together federal, tribal, state, local, and industry partners involved in planning for an

d responding to chemical accidents. Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) and Tribal Emergency Response Commissions (TERCs) from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska attend this three-day conference that includes five technical tracks and half-day in-depth training sessions. Prior conferences included:

Opening remarks were given by Phil Kirk, Director for the Region VII Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Keynote speaker Tim Gablehouse, president of the National Association of SARA Title III Program Officials talked about some of the challenges LEPCs face. Blase Leven, Director of the Center for Hazardous Substance Research and the Technical Assistance to Brownfields Programs at Kansas State University gave a brief presentation about working with tribal partners and moderated a panel of tribal response and emergency management officials from four tribal nations.
