Mabongor Siblings Take On the Challenge to Become United States Marines -
For the Mabongor siblings, they always leaned on each other with unrelenting support and pride. Kakai (21), Andrew (18), and Kana Mabongor (19) always knew they would remain closely bonded but will now be embarking on a new journey: earning the title United States Marine.

Kakai always had a desire to serve, inspired by her father’s desire in his upbringing. Initially uncertain of how to begin the process, Kakai had received a card in the mail to request more information about the United States Marine Corps. Jumping at the opportunity, Kakai made sure her brother Andrew was by her side as she scheduled to meet with a Marine Corps recruiter.

Soon enough, Staff Sgt. Dedrik Marler, a recruiter with Recruiting Substation Joplin, arrived at their home to meet both Kakai and Andrew.

“It was so cool; we were speechless seeing him get out of the van in his dress blues,” said Kakai.

After weeks of prayer and discussions, the Mabongor siblings finally gained the support of their parents. Their father, still residing in Uganda, used his faith from a distance to help support his three children in making the decision to serve their country, side by side.

“I wouldn't be where I am without my parents. Our dad was loving but stern, and our mom was our teacher throughout life,” expressed Kakai.

Within one week, all three siblings enlisted and began preparing for their upcoming ship date to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

“People look at the job they want, but I am joining the Marines because it will make me the person I want to become,” exclaimed Kakai.

Each sibling has their own goals and interests; whether that be fashion or acting, these future Marines aspire to build their foundation through military service.

Kana expressed that her siblings and she never considered joining another branch—they saw the Marines and knew the challenge was for them.

Growing up, the Mabongor family relied on faith, unity, and service to overcome adversity. Now, the siblings are ready to challenge themselves once again as they head to Marine Corps recruit training, as a team.

Win for Your Nation Through The Law

Advantages to serving as a Marine Judge Advocate include the privilege of leading Marines and the ability to advance your knowledge and expertise through criminal litigation experience across diverse legal portfolios early in your law career. Very few lawyers in the private sector get exposure to such variety and hands-on experience so early in their careers. In addition to hands-on legal experience, the Marine Corps offers opportunities for Judge Advocates to deepen their expertise by obtaining a Master of Laws Degree (LLM) and attending training courses at professional legal institutions throughout the United States.

HOW ARE MARINE JUDGE ADVOCATES DIFFERENT?

Serving as a Marine Judge Advocate is different from being a private attorney or an attorney in another service.

Unlike private sector attorneys, Marine Judge Advocates take responsibility for caseloads immediately in their first tour. With the assistance of supervisory Judge Advocate mentors, new attorneys immediately begin practicing law in the fields of criminal litigation, institutional compliance, government ethics, administrative law and operational law.
