Women’s History Month Spotlight:
Dawn Rattan, JCCC Trustee's Vision for Downtown KCK
Born and raised just blocks away, Rattan brings personal passion as well as a wide-ranging skill set to the role, shaped by her corporate career in manufacturing, her years as a small business owner and her experience as an elected official.
In honor of hashtag Women’s History Month, LISC Greater Kansas City is highlighting Rattan’s leadership as she helps write a new chapter for the city’s historic urban core. Her story reflects persistence, vision and a willingness to take on challenges others might avoid.
For Rattan, the work is deeply personal. “I’m from Kansas City, Kansas, and I care about the area,” she said. Raised near 21st and Georgia, she sees her role not simply as a job, but as a calling: “I want to be a part of the solution.” 🔗 https://www.lisc.org/kansas-city/regional-stories/womens-history-month-spotlight-dawn-rattans-vision-for-downtown-kck/

Last November, the Board of Commissioners for the Housing Authority Kansas City (HAKC) approved a $2.6 billion, multi-year development plan that will deliver more than 7,000 housing units through new construction, redevelopment and acquisitions. The plan calls for the transformation of all existing HAKC public housing properties into mixed-income communities, the creation of a Class-A mixed-use headquarters as a one-stop hub for resident services and the use of innovative public financing tools, including a credit facility and bond issuance.

HAKC describes the initiative as one of the most ambitious public housing revitalization efforts in the region’s history — not simply a construction program, but a strategy to link housing with economic mobility, entrepreneurship and pathways to homeownership.

In a recent conversation with LISC Greater Kansas City, Nona C. Eath, Executive Director of HAKC, reflected on the scope of the plan and her approach to partnership and regional collaboration.
