The group was asked to sponsor a basketball game against the prosecuting attorneys office, Kansas City Police dept and local drug dealers. The goal was if the drug dealers lost they Would shut down 80% of their drug houses. If the Police dept lost they Police dept along With the prosecuting office would help with a reeducation and job program for all involved In the basketball game. Community Unit
ed popularity grew throughout Kansas City. In 1998 they started a movement in The Vineyard Gardens to stop one of the most over populated areas with crime that Kansas City Had ever had. Out of a 2-bedroom house they started a jobs training program, reading program, Budgeting programs and a place where kids could come to get on computers and hang out and talk To some mentors. This went over so well the City Council in 1999 asked them to help spread more programs Throughout Kansas City. They took on a housing complex called Charlie Parker Square where local Gangs had taken over to the point of management was always run out of their own offices. But The men and women of Community United started a tenant’s Association and showed the tenants How to reclaim their apartment complex. The Lower level of the clubhouse was transformed into A community center by community United with games, computers, tutoring and after school programs, cooking classes and lots more for The tenants and surrounding areas of Charlie Parker Square. In 2000 Community United moved to 9th and Prospect where the programs grew to include Feeding not only the kids in the neighborhood but the entire North East community. They Partnered with Harvesters to start bringing in semi loads of food to be passed out to the public. The first load was 3 semis of can goods, cereals, meats and vegetables. In 2001 they hosted the first community debate for city council in the sanctuary. This put
Community United in the forefront of politics within Kansas City. In 2002 was the birth of The housing program where people coming out of jail or off the streets were given the opportunity To work on a house and learn skills and also move into some of the houses they worked on. This Program helped clean up a lot of blight left within the urban core. In 2003 they started neighborhood clean ups where the group had grown to over 150 members to Help with clean ups, community projects, mentoring programs, after school programs, feeding Programs and much more. In 2004 there was a cry that came out about the construction industry not having enough
Minority participation. Out of the grew the group Friends of Construction which monitored and Helped train minorities in the construction field. The year 2005 was a record year for the murder rate in Kansas City. Once again the community Turned to this group to help with the prospect corridor murders, the gun violence and start A peace summit between the gangs of Kansas City. Community United started patrolling the streets All hours of the night, this helped lead to the arrest of the corridor killings. In may of this year community United helped plan, developed and implement the very first Troost Fest. It's Members slept on the streets the night before to Pray for peace and start the Festival off On a good note. In 2006 Community United was able to rally enough support throughout Kansas City to sponsor 12 semis of food to be passed out the day before Thanksgiving. This fed over 16,000 families That was reported by CNN. In 2007 there was a shooting and a murder every other day. Community United called for a State Of Emergency on the City Council floor for a community march which came from all four directions And ended on Linwood and Prospect. Out of this march was a plead to all the men to stand up And become peacekeepers within Kansas City. Hence the Peace Keepers were formed. Over 500 Black men that took the concept of "it takes a whole village to raise one child." In 2008 the Peace Keepers reclaimed the city with more after school programs, mentoring programs, Appointed block captains and neighborhood watches. In 2009 Community United concentrated on the abandoned houses and vacant lots and strengthening The housing program to help with the homeless. These are just some of the accomplishments of Community United throughout the years.
